Yes, the strap does need to be removed in order to mount it to the ballhead. For me I actually prefer it that way, the strap doesn't get in my way when I'm composing a shot. I also have noticed during some long exposures where the strap catches some wind and moves the camera ever so slightly. So with it not being directly connected, problem eliminated.

I understand, but I would rather have the option of removing the strap when necessary than be required to do so every time...
