Why won't Canon software not recognize camera?

I'm not sure if this is posted to the proper forum, but it appears to be a computer/software issue, so I thought I'd ask.

My son has several Canon cameras, from compact to SLR. Until recently, he was able to connect the cameras to his computer, and the Canon software (not sure whether it's Zoom Browser of Image Browser) would automatically recognize the camera and display the photos for viewing or downloading. This software has recently stopped recognizing the camera or opening the photos, although the computer operating system (Win 7 64 bit) shows the camera, and my son can drill down to the photos and download them (but not with the Canon software).

Any ideas why this is happening, and how to fix it?

Were the previous successful connections done with the Win7 64 bit?

John,
Yes. He had been connecting successfully for a couple of years with Win 7 SP1, 64-bit, using several Canon cameras.
