Noise???

Unfortunately, this was shot jpg without a flash at a higher ISO.
What kind of artifact is this?
Not the typical noise I'm familiar with.
Recommendations?

No. I already opened the shadows some and did some noise reduction with ACR.

f/5.6, 1/60, 6400, a6300 with kit lens at 16mm, shot on a tripod so I could be in it.
I guess I could have gone with f/4, but there were 2 rows of people and wanted some more DOF.
It's cropped a lot to show the detail. It's a thigh.

I'm planning on printing this on metal at 20x30 and taking a chance.
It's a family portrait and can't be reshot.

May we see the 100% crop from the SOOC?

Please post the original image. The leg pic is also a crop (assumption).

Yes, of course. A crop is what we need to see the noise. There is no benefit in seeing the whole photo.

The first crop you posted is a heck of a different size (zoom) from the second one you posted. Did you resize as part of your editing?

Yes there is.

If we see the whole photo, we then have a good idea of just how bad the noise will be at a given output size. Without the entire image and without knowing the desired final output, it is impossible to know whether the noise will be a problem or not, and if so, just how much of a problem it will be.

Would you be able to show us the full EXIF data for this image?

Also, could you let us know if you increased the exposure in editing? It looks as if you may have shot the image darker than you should have, and then "brightened" the image up in post........which, of course, is a big "no-no" if you want to keep the noise at bay.

I resized the crop to 20x30 at 240px to print. In the past, with daytime/outdoor shots at low ISOs, printed on metal, they came out great.
Sure, there are things I wish I had done. Live and learn for next time.
I adjusted the black/white points and needed to bring up the shadows and exposure, and fix the WB.
I don't have a choice.

I gotta say...I don't really understand cropping down into the leg of one person and inspecting noise. Tighter framing of the original would have helped.

I agree.
I should have shot it more tightly, but there was a staircase banister in front of the tripod, whose one leg was actually on the first step.
It should have been more tight, but I wasn't sure at what dimensions I would ultimately print it, and I figured better to be larger than needed and be able to crop in post.
RAW would have been better.
Outdoors in better light would have been better, but it was already too late when everyone finally got there.
Obviously, not optimal, but it was a tough situation with an amateur hobbyist at the helm.

I probably missed it, but what camera was this? There is a difference in the JPG engines of latter vs former Canon DSLRs.

Also, in-camera JPG with substandard settings like aggressive picture styles will create some artifacts, coupled with resizing up and doing more post processing after the fact.

What I see is noise that was sharpened, then resized up, so now those sharp noise areas get larger into different patterns due to the resizing algorithm used.

Here's one with some PP (black/white points, WB, brought the shadows up, exposure, cloned out the plant growing out of my sister-in-law's head, noise reduction) cropped to 20x30@240.
The camera is a Sony a6300.
There were no "in-camera" adjustments.
It's just concerning since metal prints can be unforgiving, but I guess I don't have a choice.
If it was being printed on canvas, it wouldn't be an issue.
