Just when I thought I had control of the camera bag situation, I get dragged back in.
This is the rig-
7D MKll + Canon 1.4TC + Canon 500 f4 IS MKll + lens hood in shooting position.

I want a bag that will allow the above to be store in back of the trucks, ready to pull out when needed without having to fiddle around with putting on the lens hood. Not really necessary to be able to carry other lenses, just a spare battery or two, extra cards and the such.
Does not have to be a "all day comfortable walk 20 miles through the hills" comfortable back pack since That is not what I do. I am lucky enough to have access to prime birding/wildlife areas that do not require using a GPS and a Sherpa to pack the tent and food.

For years I have been using a couple of Think Tank bags, Glass Limo and Street Walker HD to carry my gear, always with the lens hoods in the shoot position. Unfortunately, Think Tank does not offer a bag that will accept the 500 with the hoodie position.
I have borrowed a friends Lowe Pro Lens Trekker 600 AW lll and am fairly certain that I could rent it out as lodging on days I am not using it. It is a monster and while you can put the 7D MKll in it with the 500 and the hood in shooting position, it will not close it you attach the 1.4TC

The Kinesis L511 has be recommended and will fit the above but with the hood reversed.

One detail that is kind of important is that I live in The Great White North and a lot of the speciality bag companies do not have any distributors up here so touchy/feely is not possible.

Any input from those who transport there long glass with the hood in position would be appreciated.
Cheers.

How about the sister company of Think Thank, aka Mindshift? I would look at the Firstlight series.

Fstop Sukha with tele master ICU is what I purchased for my 600 MKII. I haven't used it yesterday but I really like Fstop bags.

Kinesis L611 or L622. Add straps and a waistbelt to make it a backpack. If you decide you want to bring along another lens, body, etc you can add the appropriate pouches as needed, it's a modular system. I don't think you will find a better solution for your described need.

Thanks for the suggestions folks. There are 2 bags I'm looking at, the Kineses and another bag that is "custom" made.
Neither are available up here in Canada so a little cross boarder shopping trip in in the plans shortly.
Cheers.

That Moose Peterson bag looks like the Gura Gear Bataflae bags, but not quite as well designed. It also doesn't meed the OP's requirement of having the hood in shooting position.

I have been talking with John Stanford who owns Vertex Photographic and have ordered one of his Big Lens Bags for a 500mm f4.
The bag will hold my 7D MKll + 500 f4 + 1.4TC with the hood in the "shooting" position. I have read a pile of reports on all the long glass bags that would allow me to transport my rig ready to shoot and John's bag is the most compact of all of them. Granted, it is very usage specific but it will only be used while in my pickup and for short (read: just over yonder) walks. I have other bags that can be used if I need more padding/protection on a long drive or as carry one luggage. The beauty of John's design is how quickly a camera and be taken out, ready to shoot. It can also be belted in place on a car/truck seat and will not bounce around.
Unfortunately, John is recovering from an operation and there will be a slight delay in production time. John makes the bags to order, one at a time.
Thanks everyone for your ideas and suggestions.
Cheers.
Ian

Ian: In this photo it appears as if the camera body is rotated 90 degrees to the normal shooting (locked) position. Is the camera attached to the lens? Am I missing something?

John,
It is the tripod ring that is rotated to 90 degrees.
I received notice this week that it has been shipped. As soon as it arrives, I'll take a few images of it and post them.

Ah, That makes more sense. You have piqued my interest with this one. I'll be watching closely to see how you like it.

To add to the never ending "Perfect Bag" element, the Gura Gear Bataflae 32L just arrived. I managed to source a brand new one here in Canada at a great price. I know that it will not hold the 5D MK4 and 500mm with the hood in the shooting position but reversed, which is OK. I wanted a bag that would hold both the 7D MKll with 100-400 attached and the 5D Mk4 with the 500 attached plus the extras. I will not be back packing this bag but rather using it as a "central holding system" for my gear. A grab and go bag.
I will be down to a 3 bag system, the Gura Gear for holding both bodies with lens attached, the Vertex for the long glass with hood in shooting position and a Think Tank glass Limo for the 100-400 with the hood in the shooting position.
As soon as the Vertex arrives it will be time to find a new home for the Tamrac, Lowe Pro and Think Tank bags. Garage sale about to happen :)
