So my travel workstation has been a 2011 Macbook Pro 2.4 GHz with 4gb of RAM(stand macbook pro specs) for the last couple of years but its very slow now. For 99% of the time i'm editing photos in Lightroom and using Final Cut Pro X or iMoive for light video editing. The macbook is struggling with these tasks and im wondering if i should either upgrade my macbook with an SSD and 8gb of ram or sell the macbook and put that money towards an iPad Pro 12.9'' wifi only. Does anyone have any experience with an iPad Pro and editing with Lightroom?

Not sure about the Ipad Pro, but I can't believe it would be much faster than a MBP even if it is 6 years old.

If it's the 13inch MBP it's the same spec as one I had, 2.3ghz i5. You can up the RAM easily yourself (takes no more than 5 mins) and the kits are cheap ( Crucial and others ) for 2x 4GB. 8GB RAM in that model also unlocks a bit more Graphics RAM, up from 384mb to 512mb. Not much I know, but it will certainly help with Final cut Pro.

I'd be more inclined to do this first and see if it helps before splurging on an Ipad or a SSD.

iPad Pro is not good for editing. iPad Pro is nothing more then a iPad but bigger screen, better audio, and keyboard dock. It's still iOS and not a full Mac OS.

Download Lightroom for an iPad and see how you like it. I personally hated it since it was very basic.

I just sold my big iPad. Turned out to be a real disappointment. It's just a big iPhone that doesn't make calls. Too big to really carry around. My old MacBook Air is way more useful.

If I was to go out and buy something new it would be a MacBook pro or an Alienware laptop.

Slapping Pro on a product has become a joke, it no longer means anything in most cases, just another marketing term. Phones and tablets have come a long way in recent years, but are still nowhere close to laptops/desktops for everyday editing. Fine for some quick touch ups and such on a few photos here and there, but nothing I would use beyond that.

The iPad Pro is not a computer, nor a replacement for one, unless you can do everything you need to do on iOS. It does not run Mac OS applications, including those you've mentioned.

In some cases there are mobile versions of the apps for the iPad Pro, but they are not the same either.
