Its long due the upgrade of my faithful Canon 450D (XSi)...

Nowadays I see good and smaller mirrorless bodies/lenses from others brands, and I wouldn't mind trading all my "old canon lenses" for something more recent with better IQ and hopefully lightweight.
But one of the main reasons that keep me connected to Canon is the good old MPE-65.
Since its a manual lens and I use it with the MT-24EX always in manual mode, I think it would be possible to make this setup work on other brands with a "simple" lens adapter that does aperture control (no AF performance concerns).

Does any of you have experience (or know someone) using this lens on other brands?

Sony, Panasonic, Olympus, Fuji, etc?

There is no reason why you could not acquire Sony or any other brand body and lenses, and just retain a Canon body dedicated to the MPE-65.

But what might be interesting would be to mount the MPE-65 on a micro 4/3 with higher pixel density for higher effective magnification...

I guess you're right, in the end I could sell all the canon lenses and keep the 450D (since it still works and is worth peanuts) + MPE-65 + MT-24EX just for macro work... sometimes we miss the obvious option :D

Anyway, I would prefer to use them on a more recent body (better ISO performance, dynamic range, etc...) if possible.

Micro 4/3 is on the table due to being more lightweight, but I still have my doubts regarding the EVF performance for macro work...

I have a sony A7 body as a replacement for my 5Dmk2/MPE-65 set up if my 5Dmk2 eventually decides to die. I have already used it for test shots and it's fine with of course an adapter with the MPE-65.
There's some distinct advantages using the MPE-65 with an EVF camera.

Thanks for your feedback @LordV :)

One of my concerns is the battery usage, doing macro with live subjects we spend lots of time looking a viewfinder getting the composition right and waiting for the right moment...

You pointed out the EVF as having some advantages over the OVF, you left me wondering why you to keep shooting with the 5D instead of the A7 :)

Is it just a matter of personal preference (like camera grip, PP workflow, etc)? or did you found some disadvantages on the field (lower IQ, lack of xxxx?) ?

Thanks!

Warlord, I already use a sony a6000 with my canon fit sigma 105mm OS - it's a good combo.
WRT a7 and MPE-65- I bought the a7 as a replacement for the likely breakdown of my 5Dmk2 (it's done about 160K shots) but so far it's refused to die.
You are right about battery usage on the sony cameras- they only have a small battery and it does not last that long but luckily the cheap replacements (plus a charger) do not cost much If you look at the EVF being an advantage for macro (which I think it is with focus peaking and exposure zebra warnings plus the ability to zoom and artificially lighten the viewfinder) and then look at what else you get with the sony sensors for the price over the canon counterparts then I think it's an easy decision to make. The only downside is the overly complex Sony menu system and the wonderfully complex but fragile looking flash connection system.

Why not use a canon as a replacement for a canon? Also why not wait for it die before you get it replaced as they can last 200k+?
Just out of interest.

I think the sony bodies are better value for money than canon ones.

No real reason to keep on using the 5Dmk2 - I'm just very used to using it.

Interesting - I didn't know that. Is including the cost of the converter? If so Canon are very expensive.
