If I thought you were being harsh, I'd let you know. I'm just interested in an answer that helps me understand what's actually happening!

True, until the digital era.
Print size and view distance are losing their meaning in the digital era.
Most users don't print anymore.
Displays are bigger and bigger and much more true-to-reality than obsolete prints.
Folks now zoom-in 1:1 and get as close as they want to the display.

It's clear that sensors resolution and competing lens resolution are the only limitation.

So what does "depth of field" actually mean today ?

It's the depth of space where you get maximum resolution.
And maximum resolution is a function of lens aperture killing aberrations as much as required by a sensor element size.

.. and then there's diffraction... but that's a different story.

And here I thought "focus breathing" was a Lamaze technique. <eg>

I've had both - actually traded the 35 1.4 (of the Sigma kind, but I've NEVER had any focus issues) for the 50 1.2. The 35 was sharp, even 100% at 1.4 it would always amaze me how good it was. I sort of got bored with it, hence the trade.
The 50 is everything people across the internet report - misses, shifts, etc. It annoys me like no tomorrow, most of the time I'm on the verge of putting it up for sale. But then, once in a blue moon it happens - focus hits and THAT THING RENDERS LIKE NO OTHER.
Yes, I have a love-hate relationship with it
