Hi,

I often buy and resell cameras and I have a 30D with a 17-85 IS lens that's very temperamental. It focuses on things and the green dot stops blinking but when you push the button down it won't fire. Then I got it to take 2 pics, then it went back to refusing to fire.
I formatted the 2 GB CF card, I reset the settings to factory default.

Then I raised the flash to test that and it will not fire again. I put a Canon 50mm 1.8 lens on it and that will not fire either.

What is the matter with it? I've had many Canon dSLRs that were moody like this. This one seems worse.

I don't have a clue, but wonder if it will fire if the lens was put on manual focus? Maybe clean the contacts?

I'm guessing the shutter button switch contacts are suspect. Seems to be common, all you can do is either a DIY immersion in cleaning fluid or send it off to Canon to get the switch replaced.

If you have a remote cord for the camera you can confirm it's the on-board switch that is failing.

That's exactly what it is. I had a Canon remote cable on my desk and hooked up to it and it fires every time with that.
Thank you.

no worries, it's only a $10 part (well, $8.12 (external link) ) but it is soldered onto a ribbon assembly, so would probably take a tech less than an hour to replace. If it were me, I'd do it myself but I have done board-level repairs before.

The DIY isopropyl fix I'd be wary of, as you'd have no control over where the liquid is going...

I sent the 30D body back to the seller.

Thank you.

I have a 30D and had the exact issue. I performed the isopropyl alcohol DIY and it worked fine for me. You just have to ensure you don't pour too much through the battery compartment and have the camera tilted properly so it only runs through the shutter button. It has been a while since I performed this so I would definitely watch the video to make sure you are doing it properly...
