Wasn't sure if this is the correct sub-forum to ask this, but does anyone know what is up with the lack of ANY photos on the official Flickr feed for the White House? I know they moved all of Pete Souza's stuff from the previous administration, but I figured now that the new official White House photographer has been "on the job" for over a month that there'd be some photos.
I'm sort of intrigued as Souza has left some pretty big shoes to fill.
Thoughts?

The White House photographer is a contracted position by the White House. If the president wants a photographer, he (that is, someone in his staff) contracts one as a "government contractor." He gets a 1099 each year.

That's why the White House photographer continues to own the copyright to his work, btw.

My thought is why would they go through the trouble of hiring an official photographer and then not publish any images?

In fact, in Souza's interviews on NPR and elsewhere, he specifically said that his goal was to blend into the background and capture history as it happened. Basically get well out of the way and be a fly on the wall, as it were.

If I don't get the shots I want with the gear I have, the only optics I need to examine is the mirror on the bathroom wall. The root cause will be there.

Folks, this thread was pruned, nearly to death, to remove the political comments. As I've said before, stay on the photography and off the politics.

Thanks.

You might as well just purge the thread, because you can't say much of anything about this without veering in to political territory. What's left barely touches on the actual question.

You could talk about the work. Pete was also Regans photographer during Regans 2nd term.

When I was in the Marines some years back politicians change but we still had a job to do so I would imagine that Pete is kind of like that. He is doing his job and it really doesn't change if it is right or left or down the middle. I think he feels privileged to be a first hand witness to history.

My thoughts exactly. No one here is well enough connected to answer the OP's question with facts. We can only suggest possibly relevant differences between the two presidents or the two photographers. If the mods deemed the replies too political, I wish they'd intervened earlier. I tried to keep my deleted posts politically neutral.

I bet we will if the Flickr stream resumes. Comparisons with Souza's will be inevitable. But then the danger of "talking politics" will reappear.

My gosh, is the one in the upper right corner the full shot? Couldn't she have got farther back or stood a few steps to the right?

EDIT: Afterthought. Maybe the best ones are being saved for a different venue from Facebook.

They look like smartphone snapshots.

Still waiting for the wisdom they promised would be worth getting old for.
