I am selling my sigma art 24mm to get something wider. Purely for skateboarding with a side of landscape/hdr/artsy crap

My first thought is the sigma art 12-24
Only f4 but seems amazing

At most I wanna spend the 1599 but honestly wanted something cheaper
I'm fine with a prime of like 12-16mm range
What are my best quality options.

I keep considering a Σ12-24, most likely version II. I can't afford the Art. The main thing that keeps me from buying is, well crap MONEY! Besides that, I already have a Sigma 15mm f/2.8 FE, and Rokinon 12mm FE. The Rokinon gets more use, but sometimes (at f/2.8?) I need auto-focus. If the stuff you are shooting is more than 5 feet from you, and you can get by with f/4-5.6, you wont use the AF much.

pretty tough question not knowing what camera you're using but you'll get answers from 11-24 to 600mm so it really probably doesn't matter :-P

Well, true. I just assumed anyone considering the 12-24 was shooting full frame. Seems kind of dingy on anything else.

I honestly don't see a point in spending beaucoup bucks on a fisheye when when you can get the Rokinon 12/2.8 fisheye. It is manual but the IQ is excellent and holds its own against the Canon fisheye zoom that is several times more expensive. You can snag it for $400-ish any time, but it comes on sale fairly frequently down to about $360-370 or so.

Here is the photo archive thread for this lens:

If I don't get the shots I want with the gear I have, the only optics I need to examine is the mirror on the bathroom wall. The root cause will be there.

thanks guys and yeah thought my gear was in my signature
I shoot a 5d Mk III
I ended up getting a 16-35mm canon from the store earlier. the f4 version. should be more than enough. plus I needed a 35mm lens anyways even if its not the best fully zoomed

I own the 16-35/4 IS. nice lens.

For what you describe, look at the Rokinon 14/2.8.

Big difference. Methinks you'll like it.

yeah I figured this would be more than enough and when I sell my 24mm art series I'll scoop a cheaper fisheye for skateboarding

Keep an eye out for the Samyang/Rokinon 12/2.8 fisheye that I mentioned earlier. I snagged one for about $360 last year. Great lens!

Agreed. And the stereographic projection is much better.

+1. Big time.

I bought my $400 Sigma 15mm FE because it focuses closer than the Canon (which is hard to find). The Sigma 15 FE is great. The Rok 12mm f/2.8 FE is even better.

If you want to shoot skating, UWA will not look the same as a fisheye. Canon 15mm f2.8 has amazing barrel distortion; the Rokinon/Samyang is wider, but you lose a lot of distortion. I personally like as much distortion I can get when shooting skating so I would go for the Canon 15mm or the 8mm-15mm if you have the money for it. In theory, the sigma 12-24mm at 15mm would be fine, but when shooting it you're going to notice that it's not going to give the classic fisheye effect. Since it's purely for skating, go for the fisheye.
