I found one noteworthy phrase on the linked page: "and we don’t think"

I'm so hyped for a new EF-s prime. Considering how amazing even the Rebels are at this point, I was wondering when they would start offering new (and hopefully high quality) primes and zooms. I'm hoping it'll be somewhere between a 28mm-35mm so that it would be a good equivalent to a 50mm. Being that it's only f2.8 and not triple digit I'm hoping it's not crazy expensive. Somewhere else on the website CR said it might be 10mm which would be kind of a bummer. Not my style, but I'm sure some people would go crazy for it.

I don't see a lot of interest being generated by a 24mm to 35mm f/2.8 prime that vignettes like crazy when excellent glass like the 28 1.8, 24 & 28 f/2.8, 35IS, 35LII, and 24LII already exist. Each and every one of my EF primes works just fine on my 80D. Some would say they are better than any ef-s lens could be, because the barely vignette at all on aps-c. Current Canon ef-s lenses vignette 2-3 stops in the corners. Any ef-s prime would have to be cheaper than used EF alternatives to have any marketability at all. My guess is that Canon will leave that market to 3rd party vendors.

Canon also already makes some high-quality ef-s zooms: 18-55 STM, 18-135 STM, 55-250 STM. All of my EF zooms work on my 80D, too.

Problem with the ef-s zooms is that there's only 1 with a constant aperture. I wish they made great IQ f4 constant zooms like tokina. Hell, Tokina has a 14-20 f2 zoom that's not too large.

I'm bummed that the rumored ef-s prime is another 35mm lens. 15mm is what I was hoping for, with a 24mm FOVCF, which would give us a 15mm, 24mm, 40mm and the 50 STM ....all small, fast-ish aperture primes covering from 24-80mm FOVCF but small enough to fit in a pocket if you want to bring along an extra lens. We already have 35f2IS, 35f1.4(I-used market & II) Sigma 30Art 35Art Tamron 35VC and now this rumored ef-s 35.

I suppose hoping for a replacement for the old in the tooth 400 5.6 is getting to be pretty much a pipe dream. If they just updated a little bit with a modern IS system, and made it compatible with the new extenders, it would probably sell quite well.

But then it would take away from the 1-4mk2 sales.

Funny, the 600mm DO was recently mentioned by a CPS rep...

I keep hoping Canon will copy Fuji and come up with some nice wider primes like 14, 16, 18 etc. I don't see the point of a 35 2.8 when you already have the 40 2.8 pancake.

Most of that article is common sense. The 85mm f1.4L sounds like a response to the Sigma Art lenses to me. The 6D II has been rumored for a long time and I'd expect it announced in at Photokina in September, which usually means a launch just in time for the holidays. That 35mm EF-S sounds like a meh lens. It needs to be faster than 2.8 really excite people.

I'm not shocked there's nothing on the horizon for the 5DS/R's. They aren't that old and I bet they hang around in their current form for a while.

I'm betting CR is wrong on the 600 DO.

Sure wish they would have responded to the 50Art/45VC. How many years later did the 35II take to come out after the 35A? 4yrs? I'm not sure Canon puts out releases based on 3rd party companies. I'd venture to guess this 85 was already in the works in a 5yr/10yr business model forecast. Where the hell is the 50f1.4 replacement?

I'm kind of surprised by that too, but I'm sure they're worried that it'll take away from the 50 1.2 sales. It's a third of a stop difference, and if they come out with something that renders near as good as the L, I don't think a lot of people would bother with the L. I know someone who actually sold his 50L for the 50mm 1.4 USM because he said it was sharper, but he did say he missed the rendering of the L. I'm sure they'll come out with some eventually, but I can see why they haven't. A 50mm f1.4L IS USM (or even just 1.8) would be insane, but I don't know if that'll ever see the light of day.

It seems to be working for Nikon. Their 50/1.4G is a pretty good lens in its own right but the 58G, even at f/1.4 is clearly differentiated by its rendering and higher end price tag and is their clear best "normal" focal length portrait lens

Thing is the 50mm f1.2 is a high end specialist purchase. So at present Canon has 50mmf1.4 that is competing with Sigma's newer and better version. All Canon has to do is release a 1.4 of their own that competes on price with the Sigma and it won't harm their f1.2 sales because those who want that difference in aperture will still go for the f1.2.

Personally I'd like to see a 7DMIII hinted at, but as the original 7D was on the market 5 years before the MKII appeared I'm not holding my breath.
