Another test for the Sigma. This years North West 200 road races in Northern Ireland last Tuesday. Weather was cold, dry and overcast. Michael Dunlop on the BMW superbike over Black Hill a in excess of 100mph. Used the Sigma for a whole days practice session and missed very few shots. AF was more than capable of picking up the bike and holding for the sequence of 4 or 5 frames.

New owner. Just made it to my test chart for the last bit of sun for today.
Won't mean much to you, but I am seeing detail I have never seen before which is obviously good.

100% crop with some PP:

Then had to grab the flash...

IMAGE: https://farm1.staticflickr.com/886/28554895938_5e43255780_o.jpg

And then had to get a photo of the full moon rising, hardly a demonstration of the lens's ability.

I was able to confirm my suspicion, full function with Canon 1.4TCII. I'm not expecting 1.4TCIII or Canon 2XTCIII to work.
Nice to see some typical Sigma attention to detail: Detent switch for the tripod collar and the nice texture of the foot (feels like rubber).

Nice Dave.
So it beats the V1 Canon for IQ!

Get some more time on it and let us know about AF and overall "other" performance.

I've tried it with canon mkiii 1.4x and it doesn't work unfortunately. Maybe Sigma will issue a firmware fix at some point, but at the minute it works perfectly well with my old sigma 1.4x surprisingly.

I'm surprised it works with the old TC. The 150-600 C and S worked with Canon 1.4TCIII when first released but later firmware resulted in only working with 1.4TCII. I had an old APO EX DG 2X TC but not the old 1.4TC. The 150-600 Sport worked with one of my Canon bodies, not the other two. I can't remember body details, I had 1DS2, 1D4, 7D2.

I have the new Sigma 2X TC, I decided it was worth it for the rubber seal, which I was glad about today with the first lens and 5D4 outing in the rain.

I have started a thread in the lens sample forum:

These were taken handheld while dodging a person actively trying to obstruct me from taking photographs. So in most cases both the subject and the camera were moving. (These are mine photos.)

wow im watching videos coming out and the Sigma look impressive for a 500F/4......and its 3000 cheaper than canon

I have tried the 150-600 sport and was impressed with that over the 100-400

think i would be inclined to go Sigma

Its 3000.00 in the states. For 3000.00 savings you could buy a 150-600 and still have a grand left

Red Dod your shots are pushing me towards sigma. I now tracking bikes like that is not easy. Im impressed

$5999.00- Sigma

$8999.00- Canon

This is going to force Canon to drop prices.

Notice that canon has no intent of getting into the 150-600 markets. If this sigma is as good as the 85 art v/s the 85L debate- Canon is in deep deep crapola. I love the Sigma 85 art. It has better color and contrast than canons L, its as sharp, focus is faster, and its cheaper with a 3 yr warranty

Hi All. This thread has been quite! I am back to ask what settings using the dock are you using for the 500mm f4 for wildlife? I am heading to South Africa for 2.5 months and will pick up a new 500 sport with 1.4 TC in Pretoria. Any experiences with different setting would be appreciated!

Thanks, Robert

I have not used the dock. Reason: KISS and If it aint broke don't fix it. 'Wildlife' might as well be 'Photography'. Resting Lion, running Cheetah, perched bird, bird in flight, flock of birds in flight, animal in grassland, animal in thick jungle....

If you have the dock and software you can make a change at anytime once you have experience with the lens as is.

I've used the dock with the 500mm and 120-300 sport basically to improve the response time for AF acquisition. I use both lenses primarily for sport, where fast focus is important. I've found both lenses work really well with it. In terms of wildlife though, I imagine standard setting should work perfectly well without making any alterations.
