Just bought a 35mm ART and will fund that by selling my Tamron 24-70 2.8 VC. Rarely I take group photos and will be needing a wide angle prime. I see an occasional EF 24mm 2.8 on Ebay but they are from Japan, and I don't know if I'm that brave........ what other options should I be looking at for a Full Frame Canon? Infrequent use, do not want to spend more than I have to.

Thanks

I agree with selling the Tammy 24-70 VC. Had one. For less than 2 weeks. Not impressed. The 24 f/2.8 IS vignettes at about +3 stops. The 28 1.8 is 1.3 stops faster, and vignettes a boatload less. Top of the line: Sigma 24mm f/1.4 Art.

I use the EF 28mm f/1.8 because it good, and it is cheap. Another $1,000 for 4mm and 2/3 of a stop just doesn't work for me.

My suggestion was a replacement to the 35 art as well...kill two birds with one stone...but wont matter if he needs f1.4

Didn't think of that. Makes perfect sense.

You may consider a used Samyang 24 1.4 to also open up astro stuff. If you can live with MF only.

Otherwise Sigma 24 1.4 but the price is higher and it seems the weakest of the Art line.

Isn't that a bit like saying 'the slowest F-22' or 'the cheapest Lamborghini'?

I do a lot of low light church photography: First communion, Confirmation, and I was shooting a lot at 3200 and 6400, usually 1/125 (so vibration control was never a plus). So yes I need 1.4 glass; I'll just inch closer and shoot a little wider.

A manual focus lens would be perfectly fine; I usually set these up on a tripod and stop down.......... so it doesn't have to be fast. Really this is the only time I forsee needing this lens. The rest of the time I'll stick to my new 35 ART, 85 1.8 Canon, and my 135L. When finances permit I believe I'll move up to an 85 ART.

Thanks for the thoughts. Others?

I'm not seeing anything more economical than the 80's vintage EF 24mm 2.8..............

is stepping back and using 35 an option? 24mm group shots are distortion heavy, and churches are typically..... BIG.

Wish 35 was option. I'm backed into a piano and it would be too tight. Thx

Heya,

Samyang 24mm F1.4 manual lens, top shelf optics, great lens, manual focus and you're good to go.

The older Canon 24mm F2.8 (non-IS) is still a great lens. (USA sale) (external link)

There's also the Canon 20mm F2.8, still nice and affordable, a bit wider. (USA sale) (external link)

There's also the option of going to the 28mm F2.8 non-IS (USA) (external link) or 28mm F1.8 (external link) for inexpensive wide options.

Another option is a used/refurb 24-70 F4L IS (24mm, F4L, IS, great sharp lens, inexpensive, and very versatile for other things still).

Very best,
