There really is no place like Denali NP. The scale and grandeur of the park are hard to explain. These are from the Polychrome Pass area of the only road in the park.

Great shots, Richard! Perfect examples of why national parks are so important. I've got to get up there someday.

I encourage you to visit, David. Everyone should experience Denali - it is special but there are plenty of other things to see in Alaska and it's not as isolated as it used to be.

I have been enjoying your pics from Alaska. My husband and I are headed there the end of August for 12 days. Flying into Anchorage, and taking in everything from Homer clear up to the Fairbanks/North Pole area. Also including and Alaska railroad trip to Seward with a glacier cruise. Denali will be one of the highlights. Hope she shows herself!!!!

North America's tallest? ;)

Lovely shots, regardless. I hope to visit there some day.

If I don't get the shots I want with the gear I have, the only optics I need to examine is the mirror on the bathroom wall. The root cause will be there.

Actually Denali is the world's tallest when measured from the surrounding area - most of the area around Denali is only 500-1000 ft above sea level so Denali rises almost 20,000 feet. It is taller than any mountain on land (there is one in Hawaii that rises from the ocean floor and is taller. Everest, K2 and some of the others in the Himalayas have higher elevations but they rise from a much higher surrounding area and the mountains themselves are not as tall as Denali.

Sounds like a great trip. August is a good time - the mosquitoes (Alaskan ones are big and voracious) are gone by then but it's still summer. That train ride down the Kenai Peninsula is supposed to be one of the best anywhere. If you're driving to Denali, I suggest you take time to visit Independence Mine and the Hatcher Pass area. It's sort of on the way to Denali but kind of off the normal route. The landscape there is wonderful and quiet. Many rental car agencies will not allow you to take their cars off pavement and most of the roads in the area are unpaved but there is a paved road to Independence Mine State Park.

In Denali, try to spend 2 or 3 days and take the bus all the way back to Wonder Lake. That's the best view of the mountain itself and the classic one that Ansel Adams made with Wonder Lake in the foreground. It's a long, and sometimes harrowing, bus ride but there is lots to see.

Ah, I knew about Mauna Kea but didn't know this about Denali! Thanks for the info!

rgs, enjoy your shots, it truly is the most beautiful place I've visited, I hated to leave. Good for you that the Mt showed itself, it remained hidden both days I was there. We made it to Wonder Lake and found dozens of places along the way that I could have spent the day sitting in one place taking in the scenery.
Anyone that likes scenery like this should not put it off, instead start planning to go, set a date and mark it off your list as you enjoy your photos and memories for your lifetime.
