Looking at purchasing an Einstein to use as my main light as I've read how great the color consistency is at all power levels.

Here's where I'm getting confused:

On the Buff website he has this statement: "In Constant Color mode, the emitted color temperature is held constant at 5600ºK (+/- 50ºK at any power setting or input voltage)."

Then lower down, this: "The dome lowers the color temperature by approx. 300K."

So does this mean when I have the model hold the color checker target grid I'll always be seeing 5300K? Does it really make that much difference in color temp? Can you shoot without the dome on?

Don't know why this is confusing me so much!! Thanks all!

I have never used an Einstein, but I've heard the color consistency is not as good as it claims to be. It's possible that color problems with the green-magenta axis are not factored into the 50K variance because it does not affect the yellow-blue axis.

If the dome changes the temp by 300K then just adjust the white balance to 5300K.

You can shoot without the dome, but it would probably produce some level of a hot spot depending on the modifier.

If you want to see how much impact the 300K will have move the slider on an image that amount.

I used Einsteins from their first availability until I gave up on PCB ever implementing HSS, which I asked him to do several times while testing the Pocket Wizard interface.

I never had a problem with the color temp moving around when in color mode. This includes using them to illuminate art work that was being photographed for museum catalogs.

If you want mains powered lights and don't care about HSS or TTL they are great lights.
