Someone's lense snapped, sony won't cover. Do notice the plastic holding the rear together.
It's a 70-?? Not sure what size it was. I wanted to share this with everyone since info is shared here. I have to at least contribute and don't want someone to pay top dollar for this g lense and end up in the same situation. Lense was not dropped either. He said he was hand holding camera when this happened.

I bought a Sony Sonnar T* FE 55mm f/1.8 which I dropped like an idiot. Called Sony and the lens was not longer under warranty but they still referred me to camera repair place. I sent the lens for repair anyway and at the same time I was talking to my Credit Card company to see if it had any sort of protection. My Credit Card company was going to cover up to $500 of the repair but at the same time I heard back from the repair shop and they replaced the front element for free.

I always hear different story but in my case I didn't have any issue. I ended up selling the Sony Sonnar T* FE 55mm f/1.8 and bought the Sony Planar T* FE 50mm f/1.4 ZA ;-)a

Wasn't dropped... did he bang it on something? The plastic bit that is snapped... looks like that would take a decent amount of force. Any other details on what happened here? Just curious

Looks like the 24-70 f/2.8 GM

BTW I've worked in a business that does repairs (not cameras), and people lie about this stuff all the time. "What happenned?", "Oh nothing, I just picked it up and it fell apart" when the object was obviously crushed/squashed/mutilated.

Maybe he didn't drop the lens, he just ran over it with his car or something. I seriously doubt the lens just fell apart while he was shooting with no cause.

agreed, I mean, it be more believable if it fell apart at a glued seam, but the plastic is really thrashed here, it doesnt happen that way on its own. could have dropped the bag with lens attached or ran into someone, who knows.

Hehe that lens was clearly dropped...maybe not directly on something that would scuff the outside, but you can see how thick that plastic is in the close-up and plastic like that doesn't just snap on its own. That lens mount was subjected to a lot of force.

Definitely not something that would be covered under warranty regardless of how expensive the lens is....this is why gear insurance is important!
