X-t2 vs 80D constant AF focus

Just recently conducted a fun test between the two camera's at an indoor fast spinning amusement park ride.

The 80D w/ 24-70Lmk2 took the win drastically producing extremely high keeper rate over the X-T2 w/ 16mm or 55-200 lens. Perhaps not an apples to apples test but the X-T2 struggled tracking my daughter. The 80D effortlessly tracked and acquired focus with ease. I produced alot of blurry miss focused images with my X-t2.

Everyone's needs are different. In most cases I'd assume the X-T2 will produce fast enough AF for most applications. The fun AF test I conducted truly showed me the limitations of my X-T2 vs a mirrored 80D which technically isn't a top tier sports camera.

I'm hopeful the new firmware will improve the AF speed. I was actually quite shocked how poorly the X-T2 performed. I must try to find the best AF-C custom settings to see if I can get better keeper rates with the X-t2. Quickly trying all of them I still did not even get close to the keeper rates of my 80D.

Curious to know what settings you had on the x-t2

So just recently invested into some fuji stuff. From what I keep reading your lenses are the "slow" ones. Use something like the new 35mm F2 WR and it's AF is lightning fast. I would chalk this up as a comparison of lenses and not camera bodies. The canon 24-70II is one of the fastest out there. I'd compare it to the 16-55 or the 35 F2 for a fair comparison.

This was a tough test..... I used a selective center focus and "C" for constant AF. I tried AF-C custom settings 2 & 4 IIRC. Using zone would not be able to pin point the subject in a fast rotating amusement park ride.

As I only have a 3 fuji lenses at the moment all 3 failed miserably in tracking an extremely difficult "test".

I recall using my 16-35 f/2.8mk2 as a "normal" zoom on my 80D in late summer at an amusement park. That lens would be able to track rides equally as well as my 24-70L mk2.

I'll eventually be adding more Fuji lenses to my secondary system. In most cases I'm still finding the X-T2 focus system to be more than adequate for most shooting situations.

Yes, probably says more about the speed of the EF 24-70 2.8 L Mk2 rather than the camera, that is Canons fastest lens for AF, that I've ever used anyway. The XF 16-55 F/2.8 has much faster AF than a 16mm F/1.4 or any of my other Fuji lenses, the 90mm being close. If I need speed that's the lens I use, see if you can borrow or rent a 16-55/2.8 sometime it's as close as Fuji have to the 24-70.

I always enjoyed using my 70D, the dual pixel AF was very good for it's time, and I'm sure Canon have made some steady improvements in the 80D. My 70D had a huge issue with it's regular AF so I eventually gave it back to Canon, swapped it for a lens and stuck to full frame, until the Fuji got under my skin.

Granted this wasn't indoor and maybe it wasn't the fastest moving but both of these rides were fast enough that when using the claimed "slowest focusing lens" the 35 1.4 the lens kept up just fine and this was my wife taking the photos who really doesn't know the camera well. This was the first real day out with the X-T20 and all she did was flip the switch to C mode. I know she was in single point AF also. If it was me I would of used zone and maybe choosen one of the AF modes.

Out of the many photos taken the AF performance of the X-T20 and 35 1.4 impressed me and I've had all the canon bodies and have ran a few thousand shots through the 1Dx series also so I know what AF performance should be especially when using lenses like 70-200 2.8 IS II, 200 F2 IS, 300 2.8 IS and 400 2.8 IS.

I feel the X-T20 handles very well for what it is. I'm in the process of buying a 35/2 WR lens because it's been said it's one of the fastest lenses Fuji makes so I'll need to decide AF performance vs. 1.4 for my wifes needs... which she shoots our kids so may lean toward it.

I suppose I'll have to get the 16-55 and test it's AF performance in low light to get a real idea of what it can do however to me this is not a camera that I would use it for in that application...

Maybe you should of bought the X-T20?

My "test" I performed is EXTREME in AF demands. The ride was spinning incredibly fast to the point that I couldn't physically keep up with tracking to top off I was in close proximity by the fence of the amusement ride. The 80D was focusing so fast that I couldn't believe this prosumer body was performing this well. Only issue was that the max fps would hit the buffer if I was stupid in keeping my finger on the shutter. My Sandisk Extreme pro SD card was not the bottle neck. I have this great respect for the 80D now. For general universal application I now feel confident in recommending the 80D over the x-t20 or X-T2 if form factor is not an issue.

Any soccer mom/dad and any photographer should buy a Metz m400 or fuji EF-X500 as an imperative tool to document things with the Fuji system. This is where I feel the Canon 430EXiii RT is a better flash for the average consumer/prosumer to document casual sports/fast action to portraiture with an 80D.

The X-T2 was just a blurr not achieving focus and was a severe fail compared to the 80D. Even though I truly dislike the 50mm FOV I'll probably buy the fuji 35mm f/2. The 50mm f/2 longer focal length seems interesting for certain applications.

I'll further test the limits of the X-t2. I will say it will do almost everything I demand it to do. That alone is a powerful tool!!

Talley if you recall your wife owned an 80D. If form factor wasn't a big issue I think that is a much better universal camera system to document 99.99% of all of your documentation needs for your kids. I'll have to say the Canon 24-70 on a crop sensor hits an incredible sweet spot for documenting alot of things with an 80D. Image quality wise the fuji has the "fuji colour rendition" and has an edge on image quality over the 80D. However for amusement park family documentation I need to lug my Canon gear and supplement with fuji.

The X-T20 is in my radar as my B camera for my secondary system. If I do get more serious (making move as primary) into fuji as the flash system evolves I'll consider getting another X-T2 for it's max shutter speed of 1/8000. That seems to be more of my deal breaker in the X-t20 but I will cope with 1/4000 if I must. I'd like to buy more fuji lenses before another fuji body.

I would try another test with a faster lens. Seems like that comparison was not equally weighted.

I wouldn't imagine a wide angle prime or a "slow zoom" to have extremely fast af over one of canons top performing lens.

She did own the 80D along with the 70D, the M3, the original EOS-M, the S100 and also the SL1. I've cycled her through many cameras finding her holy grail and after a week with the X-T20 she feels this is leaps and bounds better of a camera. She really loves the ability to playback and also record video through the viewfinder, she says the focusing is much better than anything she had before outside the 80D. The noise/detail handling is far greater than any of her previous choices. She says her images the colors and overall look are now on par with what I do with my 5D4.

She did say the 80D was the best AF camera before and was much better than the 70D... she continually had issues with the 70D but the 80D was rock solid.

As far as the flash is concerned... we opted to buy the X-T20 for her over the X-T2 because of the built in flash. She only ever needs flash when it's indoor or night time and the flash handling of the Fuji system on board flash is leaps and bounds better than the Canon system. No need for anything beyond that.

I'll be getting different lenses down the road but my personal style I feel the 23 f/2 is the only semi wide lens that will work for me.

35 f/1.4 or f/2 is still too long more for me and I would use it for closer detail oriented photos. Portraits the fuji 35mm will work but for environmental story telling ....not so much for me. I need a 16-55 if I want to have complete artistic control maintaining f/2.8 with zoom versatility.

I can have a 24mm equiv prime, UWA zoom, long telephoto(70-200 equiv) or 85mm equiv and do majority of all I need for paid work. Redundancy in flash units is a requirement too.

The Fuji does have the best straight out of camera video and jpg output. The X-T20 and 80D are one of my top picks in recommendations to friends/family.

Most wouldn't understand all the features those two cameras come with.
