Testing the New Solar Filter

My Thousand Oaks solar filter arrived the other day and I got to try it out on a rare morning when we weren't clouded over. Seemed to work just fine and passed its first test for the Aug. 21 eclipse. Handheld, ISO 400, f/5.6 at 1/1600. Manual mode except for autofocus, which the 5D3 did flawlessly on live view. There is even a very small sunspot visible at 10 o'clock about 30% in from the rim, confirmed at the Spaceweather site the same day.

I'm not going for high class solar scope type images, I just want to experience, and also shoot, a total solar eclipse this summer.

The Sun is well on it's way toward "solar minimum". We probably wont see very many sunspots for the next 2 years.

The above is a generous crop. 400 L 5.6. I have yet to try the 1.4x TC with this setup.

That will work with that combo . Puts you at 560mm range and f/7.84 basically f/8 . Look forward to seeing your images with that setup and images from the eclipse . I been in touch with Jerry Lodriguss about his website and showing how to image a total eclipse . I've known Jerry for almost 17 years and he's one of the best photographers I've known with film and digital . He has imaged everything possible including sports Pro NFL and other Pro sports but mainly astro work . If I wanted to learn how to take a specific images this is the man I would ask over anyone else I have ever known . He has been there , done that as you can say here in the USA and in other countries . He helped me in the beginning when I got started into astrophotography with film by personal contact and results of his work . He just recently has been reworking his website and I been waiting until he finished the part on Total Solar imaging . He contacted me yesterday to let me know it was up and running and was ok to post links to his work . So with honor I post a link that you can check out by a person who has been there , done that with great knowledge of photography and doesn't take a lot to explain , however he does have videos for purchasing that explains more into depth of How To . Hope this info might help you some in getting totally pre-paired for this upcoming event . Jerry will be there somewhere but you can bet he will be there !
