Ran into a problem 2 weeks ago while on vacation (of course!) where a couple of pictures have issue. Was shooting with my beloved 5D3 which has been flawless for the past few years and 2-300 000 shots (not exactly sure of the count).

Was using a 17-40mm Canon lens at the time though had used a Rokinon earlier in the day. Other than that nothing out of the ordinary.

Is this a sign that my shutter is on the way out. I received no error code from the camera - just happened to spot the strange review on the screen. I turned the camera off and back on and all was fine for the remainder of the trip (and subsequent 1000 or so pictures).

Thanks in advance for any advice or info!!

I've seen wierd partial colorcasts before.. usually this is something to do with doing a split write to the sd and cf cards, or one of the cards may be going bad.

Sometimes this happens when you transfer the image, and it is the fault of the card reader.

In this case, no, it isn't about the shutter at all, but something to do with the writing of the file to the card, since you saw it on the back of the camera.

I would suspect

1. the card being written to
2. electronics within the camera.

but if you took another 1000 shots with it, I'd say it was just a random solar flare, but I'd be watching those cards, and maybe just go ahead and swap them out if they are orginal to the camera.

at 300,000 clicks, you certainly have got all the goodie out of the camera, but I wouldn't worry a ton about it since it went on to work fine.

if this started happening several times, on multiple different cards, then I'd worry about the camera electronics more.

I appreciate the response

Thinking about it more it is certainly possible it was a write error. The two images it happened to are appearing as 70.3mb as RAW files where those surrounding them are in the 24 - 26mb size.

I also switched earlier in the day from writing to my beloved (and trusted) 64gb CF card to a 256gb SD card - and I know they do not write as fast and through experience are not as reliable as CFs.

At the time I was hesitant to continue shooting for fear I was possibly damaging stored content but looking back the content was still all in order so I went ahead.

Thank you again!!

Ah, well, see Canon did not see fit to bless the 5D3 with a decent read/write speed for the SD card.. It isnt' even the SD card you have, but the fact the camera hardware is crippled. If you ever want to shoot action, don't have an SD card anywhere near the camera. CF card writes fine, and a faster card is better there, but SD cards are only good for slow measured shots and will cripple the write speed if there is one in the camera even if you aren't using it. Highly recommend you get another CF card, so you can swap cards, rather than switching over to the SD card.
