I have a trip to Iceland quickly approaching. I believe there's a trip to the blue lagoon and geyser seeing in the itinerary. I'll most likely that my 60D, 1Dx MkII, tripod, etc... However, I'm not sure what lenses to take.

I have the 24-70 f/2.8, 70-200 f/2.8 IS, 70-300L, 100-400L, and 100L Macro.

My thoughts are to take the 24-70 and 100-400; and purchase the new sigma 14mm Arts or canon's 16-35 MkIII.

What are your thoughts? What lenses should I take? Should I purchase the Sigma 14 or 16-35 MkIII?

Also, I've you've been there, please share some suggestions and photography tips.

Thanks!!!!

I can't see you needing anything longer than 200mm.

Heya,

I'd just take the 24-70 and call it good.

If you were getting a new lens, I'd get the 16-35 over a single 14mm. Everything you're shooting will involve stopping down anyways.

Very best,

I'd go with 24-70mm, then if I could get a non-Canon 1.4x teleconvertor fast enough for my trip, take the TC along with the 100mm ...very compact and light weight but pretty broad range of FL, from 24-140mm is the result.

I would absolutely not bother with an ultra-wide angle lens!

Also, I've you've been there, please share some suggestions and photography tips.

I was there October 2015, and will be going back this August and September. I had a 1Ds3 with 17-40 f4L, 24-105 f4L, and 70-200 F4L lenses.
My son has the 16-35 f4L I'll take instead of the 17-40, & I'm taking a Rokinon 24 mm f1.4 for the northern lights.

So I'd also agree with Ed's suggestion.

It's always windy in Iceland, take the heaviest tripod (for stability) you can pack & carry. I had to hang my backpack a couple of times on the legs for extra weight. And depending on what style of shooting you're after, that filter list might include a 10 stop for the myriad of Iceland waterfalls.

http://larrybunch.zenfolio.com/vacation2015 (external link) has my Iceland pics, and you can see the focal lengths of every shot. Not too many longer than 70mm and quite a few if not most taken with the 17-40.

Last summer I forced myself to "lighten" my bag and took "Greek Trilogy of the Canon f/4 L IS" on our trip to Iceland. The Canon 16-35 f/4 L IS, 24-70 f/4 L IS and the 70-200 f/4 L IS. This trilogy paired with 2 5D Mark III's was certainly lighter when I traveled to Venice and Florence. Just swapping out the wonderful 70-200 f/2.8 L IS Mark II for the smaller lighter f/4 L IS for Iceland did the trick for me, my shoulder and everything else. For me, IS outweighs f/2.8 for travel in certain situations, like Iceland. Did I miss f/2.8....maybe......but the smaller lighter f/4 L IS did the trick. Although we hear great things about the 16-35 f/2.8 L III, I can certainly recommend the 16-35 f/4 L IS. Again the f/2.8 vs f/4 with IS scenario. Being able to shoot sharp handheld images at 1/10 would not be possible in the Basilica's or anywhere where tripods are prohibited.
I did not take my 100-400 version 1 with me. However I did meet a fellow "Canonista" from France sitting next to us at a restaurant in Reykjavik. She had the new 100-400 L Mark II. She loved it so much she left her 70-200 at home, pairing with 16-35 and 24-70. Like me she had the 100-400 Version 1 and whole heartedly recommend I upgrade my Version 1. She did not miss the f/2.8 as well.
You have many nice options to take to Iceland. You can create what fits your needs. The "need" for f/2.8 in Iceland may not be that critical. Your 70-300 L may just be in your bag as well.
Investing in a 16-35 may be a great start.

The 16-35, 24-70, 70-300 and tripod appears to be a popular choice. This was my first choice, but thought the extra reach of the 100-400 could come in handy.

Thanks everyone for commenting.

thanks man. i'm convinced if everyone owned these three lenses these vacation announcements would never be made haha :p I also own 100-400L II and while I do use it for landscape I usually leave it behind unless I know I will be shooting wildlife. I say usually but not always. 70-300L is just so much more easier to carry and use and is also a decent wildlife lens.

Thanks back for the kind words.... don't know how many days you'll be in Iceland, but if you do the golden circle tour you'll probably hit Gullfoss, Selfoss, Geysir, Pingvellir National Park, maybe Faxifoss and more. A day trip southeast to Jokulsarlon glacier lake and the black beach across the highway should not be missed IMHO. We did a lap of the country on the ring road in a WAY TOO COMPRESSED time frame, so we're spending a couple of weeks to do it at a proper pace. I'd highly recommend Michael Levy's Iceland photo guide and/or map at http://international-photographer.com/ (external link) to any photographer heading to Iceland.

Share some pics when you get back!

Larry
