Hi,

I have:
Tokina 11-16 - which is limited on the 5DII because it hits something (forgot which end)

On some lenses the rear element can hit the mirror and cause serious problems. That is not to say the Tokina is one of those lenses but see the thread at https://www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/3117620 (external link) and in particular the 2nd response by "wallybarthman" on how you can test the lens. Read the balance of the thread for some other limitations.

Hi,

Wow, this place has changed!

Anyway, Yosemite coming up and will have a 6-moth old child on my back most of the time, so I only want to carry one lens, maybe (maybe) two. I'm grabbing landscape shots only.

I have a 5DIII (I see the 5dIV is out, but haven't taken a picture in a year, phht).

I have:
Tokina 11-16 - which is limited on the 5DII because it hits something (forgot which end)
Canon 24mm prime 1.8 or 1.4
Canon 70-200 2.8

Thinking about buying the Canon 24-70, but that's a lot of money for one trip. Although could sell the 70-200, since I have little use for it. It's like 5 years old or more by now though.

Greatly and humbly appreciate opinions.

Sam.
Which 70-200 do you have, the 70-200 f/2.8 L, 70-200 f/2.8 L IS Version 1 or the 70-200 f/2.8 L IS Mark II?

Canon 5D Mark III (x2), BG-E11 Grips, Canon Lenses 16-35 f/4 L IS, 17-40 f/4 L, 24-70 f/4 L IS, 70-200 f/2.8 L IS II, 70-200 f/4 L IS, 70-200 f/4 L IS Version II, 100-400 f/4.5-5.6 L IS Version II, TS-E 24 f/3.5 L II, 100 f/2.8 L Macro IS, 10-22 f3.5-4.5, 17-55 f/2.8 L IS, 85 f/1.8, Canon 1.4 Extender III, 5 Canon 600 EX-RT, 2 Canon ST-E3 Transmitters, Canon PRO-300 Printer

I actually don't know what to expect. I'm generally the type to get into the action, but kid and greater than everage snow fall, plus, I've never been to yosemite. So I have no idea what to expect.

Go to google maps and search "Yosemite national park". I tried to put the link in, but the format wasn't acceptable when I tried to post it.

There are 200 photos including some 360 degree views.

Flickr is another site to go to. This will give you a good idea of what to expect in terms of photo opportunities.

Here is a search of this site in the landscape forum for yosemite; there should be lots of photos with metadata which will tell you what lenses others were using to take the photos.

Hope this helps!

When carrying only one lens(which is rare) I'll take my 24-105.

I would suggest finding a way to have more with you.

I've been to Yosemite a number of times. To me, it is one of the most beautiful places on earth and being there in May should provide great waterfall flow.

My most used lens is my 24-70, second is 16-35 and third is 70-200. A 24-105 would work great for a lot of the type of photos I take though I would like to have something wider. I could live without a 70-200. f4 would be fine for all the lenses.

My photos are HERE (external link) and HERE (external link) if you think seeing them might help you decide.

Thank you for all the links of images and advice! I appreciate every bit.

I don't know if it's a good decision, but I'm now leaning towards two lenses: my 70-200 and a rented 16-35. I don't think the missing 35 to 70 in the middle is going to ruin anything for me. this is all preliminary of course.
