So I was looking at the fotodiox ez pro octabox, and sadly they never have the size in stock for elinchrom. I thought about purchasing the size and a separate adapter until another photographer suggested looking on ebay for an unbranded one. I found something similar but instead of mounting to the strobe you put the strobe inside it and mount it through the umbrella holder and bounce light.

Has anyone used something similar with the strobe inside a deep umbrella and bouncing it? Any info on how good they are, not the generic ebay stuff but this bounce style softbox, would be appreciated. It will be used with DLite RX2s.

The Westcott Apollo works that way. Lots of people have also been using large parbolic umbrellas with diffusion socks as well, and Elinchrom just released their own deep umbrella with diffusion sock. Given the variety of modifiers like that I can't imagine they're too bad.

Jut remember the 'depressed-angle-issue' with Apollo style setups - you may need a micro boom or equivalent ..
and
consider your preferred gel options - there are workarounds for either ..
and
buried strobe controls/buttons - an issue or not?

Thanks for the heads up. I didnt think of needing a microboom, though I have been looking at picking up some heavier duty stands anyway. Controls arent an issue, Elinchrom's wireless system is great about on camera controls.

Heya,

I use them, they're brolly boxes. I use the 47" Godox/Neewer ones. I use them with speedlites, strobes, etc. Love them. I stopped using my Fotodiox EzPro 48" Octa because the 47" Brolly did the same thing basically, with a lot less weight, and the weight is centered rather than hanging off the edge of a strobe. Really great modifiers for the super cheap prices they are.

+++++++++++

Awesome. Thanks for the info. I was wondering if they were technically a brolly box. Im guessing the unbranded ones are close to the Godox/Neweer as I see Ebay ads for Godox/Neweer but they arent branded. Have you had issues with the poles bending at all? Thats my main concern.

I would also look at photek softlighter. No need for the boom as strobe is on the stand but still indirect. The end result that Martin posted look very good but my issue is the strobe being too close to the silver end in that setup shot and its weight hanging on the thin rod like you mentioned.

The new Elinchrom Deep Umbrellas are top notch, excellent for shoots where you don't have a lot of time or space to set up shop.

Heya,

Nope, there's no weight on them, the weight is on the stand with the light, the umbrella setup, there's literally very little weight and it's centered, so it's not hanging from a side and bending under torque. I've used mine for years now, have several, they hold up really well. Even if they bust, only $30!

Very best,

Concerning booms, I think plenty of good info can be gleaned or inferred from this video (note that this is their Alu version - they do a Steel version (& video)):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xL4OUMxnd5M (external link)

. . rated at 6.5 lbs (2.9 Kg), they only fly a Speedlite - looks like their counterweight is approx 3 X the payload.

Your D-lites complete with big modifier will be less than 2.6 Kg (5.7 lbs) - so - if you desire anything like their offset from the stand, you'd need their Steel version - or equivalent from another brand.

Brolly boxes are lightweight and typically don't add significant torque to twist your boomed components.

Anyone have sample shots to share with either size silver Eli umbrella..?

I have the whole range, in all sizes with diffuser's. Will post some samples and comparisons on my website in the coming weeks.

Actually have a food shoot tomorrow where space and time to set up is limited, so ill be using the umbrellas so that should be interesting.

From today's shoot (external link) using the Deep Umbrella White 125cm w/diffusor as key and the Deep Umbrella Transparent 105cm w/diffusor.

Worked very well!
