Hi,

Need some advice please. I just purchased a used 5D3 (I have a 6 month warranty) it arrived yesterday. Its is in great condition. Whilst testing it I noticed some hot pixels on the lcd screen. I thought it was just the screen but they move as I move round the image.
When I imported into lightroom they were not there (Raw Files) So I took a quick look in Fast Picture Viewer which uses the jpeg previews I believe and there is the hot pixel again. So I shot some image at 2000 iso jpeg and there it is again. I only shoot RAW and it does not show up in the Raw files only jpeg. I tried on both the SD card and the CF and it is always there in jpeg. If I drop the iso it goes away which I believe is normal.

The body is in great condition with only 3000 clicks (probably the reason for this is the hot pixels!)
My question is do I send it back and change it for another or just forget about it? I live in Malta and it has to go to the UK which is a pain. I read somewhere not to worry as they come and go but I have never seen it on my 6D or 5D2. It is an easy fix in post.
I dont shoot jpeg though I was planning on recording both Raw and jpeg in the hope of saving some editing time on small shoots.
Has anyone seen this before? Will it get worse?
Thing is now I know about it, its anoying me lol

Thanks in advance for any help.
Joe

If it shows up in jpg and not raw, it is not a hot pixel. Any other software involved?

Older Canon bodies would map out the hot pixel (if that's what it is) if you put the camera into manual sensor clean mode, then shut it off (or remove battery?) for a few minutes. That worked on my 500D.

Just noticed you shoot AdobeRGB. Any way that is producing the dot? Dead-center seems quite coincidental.

Lightroom and ACR will automatically remove 99% of hot pixels from RAW images. If you look at the same RAW image in DPP the hot pixels will show as white dots.

Thanks for the comments.
Tom - No other software as I can see it in the in camera jpeg preview. I only noticed it not being in the Raw files when I uploaded to Lightroom. Then I shot Jpeg and there it was again. Its not dead centre, the image is 100% crop over it.

Anyway I tried cleaning the sensor and removing the batteries and that seems to have done the trick. Not sure if its possible from it not being used for a while and just needed warming up but it is really strange it was only in jpeg. Makes me wonder if its a glitch while processing the jpeg rather than the sensor.

John - Yes easy fix, was just I was disapointed with my new toy:lol:
Seems fine now and I have 6 months to see if it comes up again.

Thanks guys :-)

I did that to my T1i (500D), and the hot spot never came back. Relax, enjoy your new camera.
