It probably would be a good idea to give us a feel for screen size you hope to accommodate and also to what, if any, gaming you might use it for. As an example of the concern, on a 15.6-inch laptop screen the Windows desktop at 1080p can look pretty decent, but push that same image to a 32-inch HDTV screen and it can be a blurry mess. The dedicated monitor is usually best as it is almost always 1080p. Relatively small TV's that can be used as monitors are often 720p and are more expensive due to the tuner.

Yes I tried a cheap TV that had been bought for use in my bedroom as a monitor. It was 32" and because it was quite cheap, it is a Toshiba, it turned out to be only 720p. About the only thing it was any good for, apart from streaming video, was having LR use it to show the full size image on it, while using the existing screen to "work".

It was horrid to look at when stood on a desk at normal computer viewing distances. It might have been better used at a longer distance, but normal "TV" viewing distances were a bit too far for comfortable reading of normal sized text.

Personally I would look to getting a propper monitor, and find a solution to putting TV on that. I'm in the UK and we have Sky TV satelite here. I have considered plugging on of their additional TV boxes into one of the spare HDMI ports on my monitor. But it is a Dell UP2715K monitor, and so would run at 3840/4K from the box.

I haven't bothered though since I just use the Sky On Demand service, along with Netflicks and Amazon Prime Video streaming services through the computer.

My daughter has the already mentioned TV in her bedroom, with both the Sky TV box and a PS4 attached. Even though she can watch "live TV" over 90% of the "TV" she watches is via the on demand services.

Our landline phone/broadband service gives us unlimited data, for no additional cost over the phone for the first year, £5.99/month after that.

We have a 42" TV in the lounge for general TV watching, which was £150 instead of £699 in a black friday sale three years ago, and then we have the systems already discribed in our bedrooms. The devices are used reflect the primary use they are put to. My system is mostly used as a computer, used for content creation, not consumption. The TV's though only do "TV" stuff, consuming video.
