I forgot my phone, so I had to fly this visually and try to guess where I was aiming the camera.

Is it a drone or something similar to a drone that you are talking about?

"Your" and "you're" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"They're", "their", and "there" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"Fare" and "fair" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one. The proper expression is "moot point", NOT "mute point".

I see now:

Drones are less expensive than a Canon lens and will record 4K, and are so much more maneuverable and versatile in my opinion. Today was the first time I had dedicated time (1 hour or so) with my new DJI 4, and it is quite a bit of fun. Now I just need to memorize the 77page regulations and take the test... :(

So there is a test? Interesting.

Out here where I live kids use them all over the place. I never knew there was any kind of test or regulations or anything - folks here use them as though it is a completely unregulated activity. But there is a vast expanse of open countryside, from one horizon to the other, so it's not like there's anyone to even know that anyone is using a drone out there. Plus, our local law enforcement is very pro-freedom, and anti-regulation, and make a point of letting people do as they please, unless whatever they are doing is causing an obvious problem.

I would like to get one, but don't know how I would go about marketing and selling the video clips that I would like to take with it. And a concern I have is that I would "crash" it into the water, because it seems that every place I want to use one is over big expanses of open water.

The first time somebody is commercially flying a drone and causes damage to the point your law enforcement files a report I believe they have to report it to the FAA. That is where trouble starts.

When you buy a drone, the FAA warnings are all over the place, and you need to comply with Part 107. Ignorance of the rules cannot be an excuse because there is so much info on this currently.

The Phantom 4 basically flies itself, it is one of the safest and easiest to fly.

yeah, i just don't see any guy lines being set up...i'm going to be out there solo...for now i'm thinking i can just angle the ball head down, and then tilt the pole back if i'm too far down, or just experiment and find a spot that's the best...i'll be using my 8-16mm, so i'll be plenty wide...supposed to get the adapter friday, so hopefully some experimenting with it on the weekend...for now i'm just going basic pole only...and we'll see where i go from there

I haven't seen this but I've heard it's an option; using a flag carrier's harness for taking the weight and helping to steady the pole. I think this would be a better option than dragging a heavy patio umbrella base around.

As for angle of camera on the pole. I found it interesting how much of a downward angle the camera actually needs in order to record a good point of view. Specially with wider lenses. Start at 45 degrees and adjust from there.

Just depends on how mobile/agile you want to remain while having the camera in the air... They make nice foldable utility carts to put everything into as well, so photo equipment, a base if needed, etc all would fit.

At least in relation to guy wires, a base weighs less to drag to the site, and complains alot less and eats nothing compared to the 2nd person you would need to help run guy wires, put flags on them, and still hope some kid running full speed doesn't clothesline himself, only to find out his parent is a lawyer. And if done properly in good weather, it frees you up to move around, sit down, etc. If you are trying to capture wildlife, having something that doesn't move for a period of time will allow the animals to reduce their guard a bit. Still I really like your idea for event photography I would think, the pole would stay right with you and go wherever you move, aim and shoot.

So now to invent some sort of long collapsible rod that can loop around the lens with a strap of sorts, that allows you to pull or push the camera angle up/down on that ballhead as you remotely compose and shoot... :)

That's a really cool looking perspective!

What are all of the orangish colored lights toward the top of the frame?

.

They are "fairy lights" strung up arounf the camp:

i'm actually kinda surprised at the number of helpful comments...i thought this might be one of those threads with no response...just want to thank everyone...i think the umbrella base is actually an idea that could be useful...part of me still wants to adapt the construction tripod to make it so the pole can fit right in there...may experiment a bit with that since for now it's all free...but first things first will just be the pole, and a ball head

Well shucks, this has me all interested now.

I have a long lighting pole that has 3/8" stud on the tip for attaching things, usually lighting gear, but I could put a ballhead on there.

Unfortunately I have zero wifi capable cameras to be able to see what I'm doing short I just setting it to AV and using a remote trigger and just hoping for the best.

Hrm...

Very best,

Very best,

Get a TPLink MR3040 and go to dslrcontroller.com to get a custom rom to flash over it. You can then attach it to the camera, and then use DSLRController on a tablet to control and shoot remotely. It is all the Camranger is built on, but will only cost about $30-40 to do.

Don't think it'll work with my 5Dc unfortunately.

It would work with my Live View capable APS-C's though.... hrm... I'd have to get an ultrawide lens for APS-C though.

Very best,
