Hello all!

Is there a stand alone version of these to purchase? I don't use it much to justify paying for it monthly.

You might be able to find them if you shop around, but they won't be the latest version and you won't be able to update them either so, if you buy a camera that came out after they stopped being supported, they won't be able to open your raw files.

Also, if you can't justify $10 month then the price of the stand alone versions is likely more than you want to pay. I don't know the dollar price but I believe the UK sterling price was similar to the US dollar price (yes, the Brits got screwed again). It was around £80 for Lightroom and £500 or so for Photoshop.

Frankly, I find paying under a tenner a month and no heavy upgrade fees every time I buy a new camera far less onerous than a lump sum of around £600 plus costly upgrades to stay up to date.

Gimp ... free and powerful enough to most likely do all you need.

You can also find really good deals on older versions of
Paint Shop Pro which will most likely do all you need.

Or about $79 if you qualify for an upgrade. I'm still using 5.7, and PSE 12

What camera are you trying to use, in converting RAW files?

It used to be that you could buy a version of Lightroom and at your discretion choose to upgrade (or not) for $99.
Photoshop was a beast of a more unpleasant nature at upgrade time.

Photoshop is no longer being sold directly by Adobe under perpetual license. The last version was PSCS6 and it was last supported by an update to the ACR plugin in (IIRC) July, 2015 with ACR 9.1.1. [Raw files from cameras newer than that will have to be converted to DNG files in the free DNG Converter in order to be used in 9.1.1].

New versions of PS are now available only as Photoshop Creative Cloud under several different subscription plans. The current version is 2017.1

If you don't use PS often, Photoshop Elements will probably suffice. Currently at PSE 15,I believe.

Lightroom can still be purchased under perpetual license as LR6, currently 6.10. It is still essentially the same application as 6.0 that was released two years ago and periodic updates provide only new camera and lens support. The parallel subscription model, LR 2015.10 periodically receives new features in the updates, features that will eventually be in LR7 - if and when there is an LR7.

I use standalone LR 6.9 and CS6. LR 6.9 will open RAW files for newer cameras. CS6 won't. I either convert to DNG if I want to open a file in CS6 or use LR's "edit in PS tool" if I want to do more editing. I can also use DPP's transfer to PS tool.

I think you can buy pre-owned CS6. Not sure if you need to register with Adobe as it would be pointless since it does not get upgrades anymore.

Do you need PS? What are you planning to do? I only use PS for one specific thing.

I seem to recall statements about LR6 not having as full a set of software features as available thru LRCC...someone more knowledgeable than I should comment on this point.

Just did some quick web searches and found this information:

What You Don’t Get with Lightroom 6

Lightroom 6 owners do not get new features added during the CC 2015 / 6 product cycle. So far CC subscribers have gotten Dehaze, for adding or removing atmospheric haze (locally and globally); local Whites and Blacks in the adjustment brush, graduated filter and radial filter; Boundary Warp, for warping panoramas created with CC/6 so that no cropping of the result is needed; Guided Upright, which allows users to draw lines on photos to tell Lightroom how to correct perspective issues; and Reference View, which allows you to edit one photo while having another photo next to it to use as a reference for your editing of the other.

Note that you will get free 6.x updates with bug fixes, support for new cameras, new lens profiles and some under-the-hood improvements.

You also receive more limited support than CC subscribers get. From what I understand, you have access to chat-support only, for getting the software installed and working within 90 days of registration. CC subscribers get premium support – chat and phone, for assistance beyond just installation, and it isn’t limited to the first 90 days.

In addition, CC subscribers receive access to Lightroom mobile and Lightroom web. With Lightroom mobile, you can easily sync an unlimited number of collections of photos from Lightroom desktop to Lightroom mobile for Apple and Android mobile devices (including Android tablets now), do some basic work on your photos on your mobile devices and and have that work seamlessly sync back to Lightroom desktop. Lightroom mobile on your mobile devices can also send your mobile device camera photos to Lightroom on your desktop. With Lightroom web, you can share collections of photos with people by turning on “sync” for collections you want to share in Lightroom desktop, and giving a web link / URL to your friends and clients that allows them to view and comment on your photos. With Lightroom web you can also import and edit photos when you’re away from home using just a web browser, and photos and editing will sync back to Lightroom desktop.

UPDATE September 2016: If you’re considering CC or 6 at this point, keep in mind that these were released over a year ago (in April 2015). There’s no indication at all from Adobe at this point as to when the next major release will occur, but if you subscribe to CC, you’ll get the next major version at no additional charge. If you purchase Lightroom 6, and if Adobe makes a Lightroom 7 available, you’ll pay the upgrade charge (which has been $79). It’s also possible that Adobe won’t make a Lightroom 7 available, in which case you’d have to subscribe to CC to get the new features.

Victoria Bampton corroborates:

"Is there a Lightroom 6 trial?

"Yes (click here for the trial), however it’s labelled as a Lightroom CC trial. It’s almost the same – the CC trial just has a couple of additional features that will disappear when licensed with a perpetual license (Dehaze, plus Whites and Blacks in local adjustments).

...As of 6.1, we have an answer. The CC subscribers are getting new features in dot releases, which aren’t available for perpetual customers. The new features added in CC 2015.1 are Dehaze plus Whites and Blacks in local adjustments. We have no further information on what else might be added in future."

Some of the new features in CC have been made available in the stand alone LR6 as presets and other tricks. This works because Adobe are not building two different process systems. All the different versions get the same process engine, they simply remove access to the tools in the interface. Since all of the editing is done using instructions that are recorded in plain text, as long as you can find a way of adding those instructions the engine will process them. There are certainly to my knowledge a couple of options around for adding dehaze to LR6. It also works the same when looking at ACR and the differences between the versions of ACR shipped with the full version of PS and Elements. With ACR for example you can apply local brush adjustments by typing in the commands to the xmp file using notepad.

Have you looked for Photoshop at a student discount from Adobe?

The other alternative is to pick an analogous software to purchase and use, like Adobe Elements or Corel Paint Shop Pro. I'd hesitate to do that for fear that the instructor has so specifically tailored the course work to specific instructions for Photoshop use, and it would be a real burden to try to get along without Photoshop! Pay for Photoshop CC at $10 for the duration of the course work, then let it lapse.
