So, I used to have a Canon 6D which was stolen and then I moved to 7D MkI, right now I started to look for an upgrade and I have two options... 7D MkII and 80D, Insaw specs on both and well at the end 7D is more robust than 80D but 80D has 24mp vs 20 on 7D...
So, I would like to hear opinions, has anyone been on the sale dilema like me?
Thanks
The 80D is only slightly slower in terms of fps (7 vs 8) than the original 7D, but obviously lags behind the 7D2 in that area.
Given that the 7D2 seems to be considered on a par with the 5D3 for AF, that would make it better than the 80D - though having used both the 5D3 and 80D I was very impressed with the 80D's AF. It's also much more capable than the 7D2 for AF at f/8; which means that if you're wanting to use an f/5.6 lens with a 1.4x TC (or an f/4 lens with a 2x TC) you'll have a much better time.
Personally, I love the handling of the 7D/5D3/5D4, but didn't really like the 60D (it feels very cheap). The 80D was a pleasant surprise. It's not on the xD level, but definitely decent.
20 vs 24mp is unlikely to make a big difference in reality. Of more importance, the 7D2 looks to have slightly better high ISO noise, but the 80D is miles ahead for low ISO dynamic range (it's one of three Canon DSLRs with new sensor tech: the others being the 5D4 and 1Dx2).
In summary:
- If it moves quickly (i.e. needs AF and fps): 7D2
- If you tend to be above ISO 1600: 7D2 (though the 6D will beat both)
- If you tend to be below ISO 800, and push shadow detail in post: 80D
- If you use TCs and need to AF at f/8: 80D
- If you really like the joystick for AF point selection: 7D2
