So, I used to have a Canon 6D which was stolen and then I moved to 7D MkI, right now I started to look for an upgrade and I have two options... 7D MkII and 80D, Insaw specs on both and well at the end 7D is more robust than 80D but 80D has 24mp vs 20 on 7D...

So, I would like to hear opinions, has anyone been on the sale dilema like me?

Thanks

Why not replace your 6D? What do you shoot? Birds? Sports? Landscapes? Portraits? Video?

That should answer your question. To the OP, I replaced my 7D1 with a 7D2. I choose it over the 80D due to the build quality. I'm very pleased with the 7D2.

My 6D is 2-1/2 years old. I have really enjoyed it. I recently bought an 80D. It is good enough to make me consider selling the 6D. Of course, replacing wide glass would be a bit of an issue, but I did consider selling the 6D.

I loved the full frame images and more the 16-35mm effect... but something Indidnt like much on the 6D was the fps compared to 7D mkI

I wasn't considering the fact of getting another 6D that, after you guys mention it could be an option...

I hear the 80D is excellent. I'm really happy with my 7d2. The FPS is crazy, sometimes I turn it down because its almost impossible to take just 1 photo when its set to high. I don't think you can go wrong with either.

Just read some reviews and see what features are the most important to you, both are an amazing value.

I seriously considered both the 7D2 and the 80D before making my choice of the 80D. Two things swayed me that direction. The new high dynamic range sensor, and the price. The 80D is a truckload of camera for the price.

The 80D is only slightly slower in terms of fps (7 vs 8) than the original 7D, but obviously lags behind the 7D2 in that area.

Given that the 7D2 seems to be considered on a par with the 5D3 for AF, that would make it better than the 80D - though having used both the 5D3 and 80D I was very impressed with the 80D's AF. It's also much more capable than the 7D2 for AF at f/8; which means that if you're wanting to use an f/5.6 lens with a 1.4x TC (or an f/4 lens with a 2x TC) you'll have a much better time.

Personally, I love the handling of the 7D/5D3/5D4, but didn't really like the 60D (it feels very cheap). The 80D was a pleasant surprise. It's not on the xD level, but definitely decent.

20 vs 24mp is unlikely to make a big difference in reality. Of more importance, the 7D2 looks to have slightly better high ISO noise, but the 80D is miles ahead for low ISO dynamic range (it's one of three Canon DSLRs with new sensor tech: the others being the 5D4 and 1Dx2).

In summary:

  • If it moves quickly (i.e. needs AF and fps): 7D2
  • If you tend to be above ISO 1600: 7D2 (though the 6D will beat both)
  • If you tend to be below ISO 800, and push shadow detail in post: 80D
  • If you use TCs and need to AF at f/8: 80D
  • If you really like the joystick for AF point selection: 7D2

Camera, some lenses, too little time, too little talent

Does the 80D use more AF points with F8 lens than the 7D2?

Yes, I saw that. I just wanted to make the point again, because Medd had not responded to your post yet (post #3).

When someone posts in error, I always like it when they come back and acknowledge the error. That gives me "closure".

I don't understand why suggesting the 6D is a bad idea. The way I read his post, he did have one at one time. Buying another 6D would be replacing the previously stolen one. He liked it. That seems to me to be basis enough for suggesting it. What am I missing?

Potentially yes. I say potentially as Canon has listed their lenses in classes, and some lens extender combinations will allow f/8 focusing with all points, while other combinations still only allow f/8 at the center point. So it seems the 100-400 MK 1 will only use the center point at f/8 with the 1.4× extender, while the MK 2 will allow the use of all points in the same situation. Although Canon have lists for their lenses, there is little apparent information about third party lenses.
