Im practicing for taking pics similar to a photo booth or portraits for a retreat this weekend.

If you want to blur your background, you will want larger apertures (smaller aperture numbers like f2.8, f4) and/or moving the subject off that backdrop. You will then want to run your lights closer so that the light falloff goes to your advantage of making the background darker and less noticeable, if that is an effect you want. If you want the backgrounds to be noticed, run the lights farther back and/or put the subjects closer, and consider lighting the backdrop separately.

I think you can pull off some good portraiture with the CL360 and the Canon flash, if placed properly. Also, possibly consider getting a large sheet of white foamboard at your local hobby shop, you can use that to reflect your flash into the shadows for a very soft fill.
