I didn't see this posted, forgive me if it was

MTF looks Identical pretty much to my 85A. Really two identical looking lenses (on charts) and should come down to preferred focal length. I enjoy my 85 so currently have no interest in the 135 but wanted to share.

Ok, sharp lens. But no mention about chromatic correction and color rendering.

Gear head charts. Nice and all that, but not a photo in sight. I don't spend $1,000 on a lens to look at the charts it produces. This may strike some folks as odd, but the exact same lens can (and does) perform differently on various sensors. I picked up a worn out 28-135 at a garage sale or something. It was atrocious on my then 60D. Pop it on the 5Dc and it was a decent performer. I think the 17-40 is a really good lens for my 6D. I used it on my 80D body. Yuck. My $75 18-55STM performs better on the 80D. MTF charts may be a fair baseline comparison. They are not real results.

I don't disagree with either of you. I will say this though... the only thing I'm curious on is the CA and Vignetting performance other than that I suspect it'll be very very close to the 85A and the 85 performs great.

Interesting comments. While I really like my 135L, and don't see upgrading that, perhaps I'd like an 85A. The 85 1.8 is about my favorite prime. It works well on all three (APS-c, -h, FF) formats, but it does have its issues. Let me know when you are selling your 85A to get the 135A. :)

you guys do know lenstip have reviewed the lens right...so has cameralabs

i am definitely picking up this lens, crazy sharp across the entire frame, vignetting well controlled, no coma, from samples i've seen across various forums posted by people (fred miranda has quite a few users posting samples) i think the rendering looks good, one may subjectively prefer one lens over another rendering wise but i think at this level it's just nitpicking and/or the usual sigma bashers because some people have nothing better to do

for me it will make not only a great portrait lens but also for shooting astro with its sharpness as well as lack of coma and low vignetting wide open

Your symptoms would show up just fine on MTF charts. The issue you describe are a result of vastly different pixel densities between the crop and full frame cameras you are comparing against.

Thank for the links. Seems that Lateral CA correction is excellent, not much so longitudinal.

Buying new, worth consideration. Upgrade from 135L? Not so much.

I posted this following reply on FredMiranda as well, and funny, we have a thread here too now? :)

I like how LensRental does their comparisons... it's nice that they are doing the 4 x 90deg shifts, then giving a visual over the lens where it is sharpest, along with running 10 samples (or more), it gets the point home more on some of the lenses they are testing. If somebody could come up with a tool a consumer could buy, attach their lenses to it, and it would do this MTF measurement x 4 orientations and provide a heatmap, they would probably be rolling in the dough, given our collective OCDs on IQ on the forums. I know, it's too cost prohibitive and the equipment isn't exactly space friendly, but still one can dream.

There was a day the only way you could get an idea of how fast your car could be was to go to track, or to a speed shop with a huge dyno. Then GPS and accelerometers become more commonplace, and viola, somebody made a small device you could mount to your windshield would give you a pretty good idea just from doing a quick run down a remote road, to now where it is integrated right into your car.

when i had a 135L few years ago i loved that lens. when I made a temporary shift to Sony That was the one piece of gear I really regretted getting rid of and since then I have wanted to buy it again I just seem to buy other stuff. But now that the Sigma is out and seems to look pretty amazing I am kinda tempted to save little extra and go for it

I have the Sigma 85mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art, and it seriously has me thinking about the Sigma 135mm. I have not shot much with the 85 yet, but
the sharpness and auto focus rival any of the Canon L glass I own. I had been a loyal Canon user up to the point of putting the Sigma glass on my camera at WPPI in Las Vegas. I will certainly give the Sigma 135mm a very careful look at the upcoming NAB show in Las Vegas.

the 135L is still a tremendous piece of glass any way you look at it, but for me the sigma is definitely worth paying the extra for (particularly for my intended uses ie including astro) as well as price (here in oz price difference between the art and the L is less than $200)

i will say this though about the new 135 art, one thing i saw from the new 85 art that i really liked was the way it handled the transition from in to out of focus, it's so buttery smooth, but i am not quite seeing that in the samples that's been posted around for the new 135 art, not a deal breaker by any means of course but something i've personally noticed

From that review:

"The surprise really settled in when I realized that it is pretty consistently beating the focusing speed of my 85mm f/1.2"

... ahem... not very reassuring.
