I currently have a 27" iMac(2013 model) with 32gb Ram, i7, and largest video card at the time. I am looking to get a MacBook Pro and am looking for some advice, I am wanting the 15" but not sure how to spec it out. I plan on having it docked at the house and connecting it to a 27" monitor. Should I spend the extra $$ on the 4gb video card? I dont do a lot of video work, just occasional drone footage. I would also like some inputs on good 27" monitors, I've been looking at the Dell 27 P2715Q...

I'd say yes. I dumped my Mac Pro and 2012 13" MBP for a new 15", gaining powerful portability and one less machine to keep updated and sorted. If I did video, I'd get another MacPro.

I run a 30" Apple Cinema Display from my MBP. Because of its size, I thought I'd go for the dual video cards. My older MBP also was capable of running my 30" ACD, but wasn't as responsive as the MacPro. I don't know how it would have been otherwise, but the 15" with upgraded video responds as fast as my last Mac Pro.

Dell are nice monitors. BenQ is good.

If I was you I'd wait... the current MBP maxes out at 16GB of RAM. It came out in October of last year and is in mid product cycle. We should be seeing more robust machines by the end of 2017.

I too would wait, I've read news recently about Apple doing an overhaul of their computer lineup in 2017; this came after they made a slight update to the 2013 Mac pro, they said that they're making a new one from scratch that will appeal to users of the cheese grater macs and will be user-upgradable.

As far as Apple's notebooks are concerned, spec it out as far as your budget goes, seeing as you won't be able to change anything post-purchase. As programs make better use of hardware you'll probably miss not having a better GPU down the lime for faster processing of images.

Are you getting the MBP for the portability primarily? It's an awful premium you're spending for that capability.

I acquired an expensive camera so I can hang out in forums, annoy wedding photographers during formals and look down on P&S users... all the while telling people it's the photographer, not the camera.

I am giving my 27" iMac to my daughter, so technically it will still be in the house. I was going to buy a new 27" iMac 5K and spec it out but I dont have a good laptop so I figured I would get the MBP and have a the best of both worlds.
