If it worked before and doesn't work properly now then either...
1. Something you changed/installed is conflicting with LR
2. LR install is corrupted
3. An important system file that LR uses has been corrupted
4. There is a hardware fault with your system.

If you have not changed anything recently I would start by uninstalling/reinstall​ing Lightroom. I had a major problem with LR 5 slowdown/freezing last year. Reinstalling didn't work so in the end I reinstalled Windows and the problem was fixed. Must have been an important file corrupted over time that just needed to be reinstalled.
