Yesterday at the class at work, someone had a Sony A7 (didn't notice which version) along with the big axx Sony 85mm f1.4 GM. When I took it to take a few shots, it felt I was holding my 5dmk3/85L but without the weight of the camera. It was unbalanced kind like when I hold my 56mm f1.2 and XT1, just more. But the new Sony bodies can do lot of stuff which canon we can only dream. Weight is one advantage however small it may be. I was showing how to shoot from a low angle. The mirrorless folks could put their camera on the road and shoot up. The dSLR crowd couldn't do it. Not to mention trying to put the AF point on model's eye when you shooting f1.4, f2. Being able to see your ambient light as you look through EVF.

Sony A7rIV, , Tamron 28-200mm, Sigma 40mm f1.4 Art FE, Sony 85mm f1.8 FE, Sigma 105mm f1.4 Art FE
Fuji GFX50s, 23mm f4, 32-64mm, 45mm f2.8, 110mm f2, 120mm f4 macro
Canon 24mm TSE-II, 85mm f1.2 L II, 90mm TSE-II Macro, 300mm f2.8 IS I

I don't understand why the DSLR users couldn't put their cameras down on the road surface and shoot up.

I do this frequently with my Canon DSLRs. . What prevented them from doing it with theirs?

Looking through OVF. You need an angle finder. With LCD you just put on the ground, select focus from the touch screen, or with Sony just let it pick the eye and be done. This at f1.4 too. I have done old style lying on the ground on my belly for those low angle bird shots and it hurts as you get old.

Canon has touch screen and DPAF.

You could also connect with wifi and I'm pretty dang sure touch and DPAF works there too. Wouldn't even need to bend over again.

from my experience with the 5d4 and 80d dpaf .. touch screen isn't accrurtate enough to get eye . face yes .. not eye

I don't know how easy is have your camera on the road (mount how where?) and then use your phone to control with fiddly wifi implementations that all camera mfg have. Maybe it is super easy. But I take my mirrorless in this age even though it is touch slow to focus. Hoping next yr Fuji adds the PDAF.

It's pretty easy to just put my DSLRs down on the ground and then get down in a prone position and use them normally. . I just look through the viewfinder and use the focus points like I would if I were standing upright. . There's no need to change anything when shooting from ground level. . Everything works the same as it does when up higher, and there's no need to make any adjustments in my technique and there's no need to use an angled finder or live view or alternative focusing methods or anything like that.

Please don't make it sound as if conventional DSLRs can not be used at ground level, because they can be used at ground level, quite effectively.

Serious wildlife photographers and macro photographers are used to spending a lot of of time laying prone on the ground - that's how these types of photography are done. . Thousands of people in these fields have been shooting at ground level for decades and decades before Sony mirrorless cameras or flip screens even existed.

The flip screens on my Sony cameras have made shooting low a pleasure rather than a pain. This has nothing to do with mirrorless, but more to do with the rear LCD being able to be flipped out. I'd never buy another camera whose screen cannot be flipped out.

what does the mount have to do with it?

i set up my camera and WiFi connection to my phone the week i bought it and didn't have to look at it again until i bought a new phone, not fiddly at all.

turn wifi on in camera
go to phone and make sure it connects to the camera (9 times out of 10 it does it without intervention)
launch Canon app and press start shooting

I'm pretty close to pulling the trigger on an A7III to replace my GX8.... Feels like a good companion to my 7DII, its not any larger than the GX8 (which is a tank) and it gives me access to a full frame option in my system

Not really going to switch completely over, but i want something smaller/lighter for walkaround/travel/restaurants, also limited video work and more work with Luna and her on the way brother

So hold camera in one hand down on the ground and phone in other hand and use the app on the phone to point at any eye and shoot no problem at f1.4/f2. If it works for you folks more power to you guys.

Twice you said put their camera "on the road". Miscommunication between put on the road and held camera near the road.

But I'm still not sure how using one brand (canon/sony) or body form factor is different than the next when lately they all have touch screens and ability to touch it to focus.

he's also mentioned shooting birds on their level, including laying down.

based on context, "On the road" means near ground level. if you were simply to put it down on the road, there would be no need to reference laying down. AFAIK, canon doesnt offer high end bodies an articulating screen.

Less of a pain but definitely not a pleasure.

If we're talking about pain look no further than Sony's PlayMemories app, makes connecting to your camera far more difficult than it should be. No idea how they can build such an advanced camera yet flub a simple app or the touch interface.

When they invent the perfect camera could someone let me know?

I have a ground pod... it works very well. That isn't the problem... it's getting my old bones on the ground and back up again. I've been struggling with some back issues. I'm working on it and seeing some improvement but not enough take my ground pod to the beach and start shooting shore birds. ;)
