I should know the answer to this, but does the Canon factory warranty begin from the date of purchase or the date the warranty card is mailed to Canon? Logic says it should be the former but I see plenty of FS ads by members mentioning blank warranty card included with the item in question, so wanted to ask.

From purchase, if canon ever requests info, it will be for a receipt from an authorized dealer.

Makes sense. Thank you. I have decided to bite the bullet and make the purchase. CPW has a good offer currently available. I intend to use the camera a lot during the warranty period.

I'm not familiar with CPW, but here is something you should be made aware of...

  1. Gray market goods, those that have no Canon USA warranty card in the box, may be refused serviced by Canon USA in the warranty period.
  2. And even after the warranty period, service of the gray market goods may be refused -- even when the user is willing to pay for repair services!

Both points certainly have been rigidly adhered to by Nikon USA and its warranty or post-warranty service work by Nikon USA.
Canon had not been as rigid in adherence to the policy as Nikon over the past, but Canon has, in recent years, been more active to reinforce its position on gray market goods on the web. Also, in recent years, Canon has been suing gray market retails of Canon goods.

Canon also says

Customers should also be aware that Gray Market products MAY NOT be eligible for:

X Coverage under a U.S. warranty
X U.S. promotions, including mail-in and instant rebates
X Technical support
X Membership programs and other service benefits

Sounds good, you will love it, and you get the full US warranty with that $3100 street price, whomever the dealer actually is under the CPW covers!

Yes, the deal is through a reputable, authorized retailer with a full Canon USA warranty. That was my primary requirement. They will ship it fully insured as well. I can hardly wait!

  • Thanks Wilt. I am aware of the gray market issues and wanted to stay a mile away from such a body (though those cost hundreds less). CPW (CanonPriceWatch) is primarily an aggregator. They don't sell anything themselves, just announce the latest deals that are out there, going to great lengths to share details about the deal and the retailer's history/reputation. I trust those guys.

I bought the 5Div a week ago from CPW. They provide the information on the dealer with a link to the list of Canon authorized dealers to make sure the camera has the US warranty. And in fact, the included warranty was US. Saved $300 over regular retail prices.
