I got these shots on Earth Day. I had never before seen a hawk this color but I'm told that it's just a dark morph Red-tail. I guess these hawks can have numerous color variations.

Dark morph Red Tails are also known as Harlan's Hawks. Red Tails are the most polymorphic of the hawk species, making IDs sometimes difficult. You did well to capture such a rarity.

I knew if I waited long enough someone who knew more than me would pipe up. Very pretty shots of a Harlan's Hawk :)

Thanks guys. I never would have figured Harlan's due to the fact that I got a photo of one a few years ago and it was a dark brown with white spots, which is more like what I see when I google it for images. I didn't realize the Red-tails had so many color variations.
