Is anyone here experiencing issues with using third party batteries? I am a new owner of an X-T2 and doing research on best way to go with batteries. The Fuji batteries are pretty expensive but I have read about issues with third party batteries but would like to hear first hand from you all.

Thanks

Define "issue". LOL

I have several third party batteries from Wasabi and DOT01. One of the Wasabi battery would not last over 15 minutes in the battery so probably a bad cell. Either way that one got tossed. One of the DOT01 battery just recently was showing 2 bars on the battery indicator on my x-e2 but in less then a minute it was completely dead.

I have not however had any over heating, swollen, or stuck battery (as I knock on wood). To me it does seem that the fuji battery does last a little longer then third party batters but when I can get about 8 third party batteries for the price of one fuji I just deal with changing battery more often. Also I don't know how much longer the fuji will last. I haven't done any physical time testing. Just to me it seems that the fuji batteries last long. It could all be in my head and they might all last the same length of time.

Thanks for taking the time to respond, you captured the "issues" I was most concerned about which is over heating leading to the swollen factor and then performance.

I think I am going to try some third party batteries before spending the extra cash on Fuji batteries.

Personally, een through my Canon days with the 5D, 5D2, 5D3, 5D4 I have seen many nightmares and heard nightmare stories from other pro photogs with third party batteries that will always keep me away from them.

To me, a $2500 camera body isn't worth saving $50-$75 on a battery IMHO. I want to ensure I am shooting with the best and most reliable hardware possible!

I have 3 wasabi and 2 oem for my X-T20 - they all work about the same. I haven't had any issues with the wasabi batteries.

I've used 3rd party batteries in my old XSi, two 7D's and my X-T1. Never had any issues, except with one of the four I have for my X-T1. It slightly swelled over time and would stick a little when you ejected it. Still worked fine, but I tossed it since they're so cheap. As said previously, you can buy a handful of them for the price of an OEM battery. For my style of shooting with the X-T1, I've never needed more than 3 batteries in one day anyways.

EDIT: Just for clarification, I meant I like 3rd party batteries and will continue to use them. Any lithium battery can eventually swell, 3rd party or OEM. The OEM ones are just way overpriced.

Thanks definitely get the point of going Fuji given the significance of investment in the body and lenses

Going OEM is always best, if you can. I've used Ex-Pro batteries and find them faultless, I binned my Wabasi ones as two out of three caused my camera to lock up. Saving $50 on a battery will make sense if you have 10 or so in your bag like me.

Any battery has those nightmare stories, all of them are prone to the same failures. Just look at the whole Samsung Note debacle.

I've used off brand (mostly Wasabi Power) batteries in every camera I've owned and in several other devices as well, none have given me a single issue.

As noted by another poster, over time any lithium battery will swell, I've had a couple of my batteries start to do this recently, but I've owned them for years and used them for probably over a hundred cycles, often letting them drain all the way down (which is bad to do with any lithium battery).

I'd be very surprised if those lock-ups weren't coincidental. I've had a couple of my cameras lock up before too, and on at least one occasion it was definitely when using an OEM battery. In fact my X-T1 was flaking out a couple of weeks ago with the battery grip on it... I assumed it must be the grip and removed it, camera worked fine after that... when I checked later it turned out the battery in the grip was an OEM battery and the one in the body was a Wasabi Power. It could be that the two batteries were conflicting somehow due to one being not-OEM, but I haven't had the issue again since that day and have tried using the same setup to try and replicate it (I blame it on buying a used X-T1 with grip for $350... who knows how it was treated, but besides that weird random issue it's been working great  )

I have always used 3rd party batteries from my canon days but keep in mind canon has been around for ages so the 3rd party clones are very close to oem.

With Fuji being "new" to mirror less cameras by canon and Nikon standards the 3rd parties have not cloned them perfectly yet. I would stick to oem if you can and buy them separately. It seems to me like the 3rd party batteries act up after a year or so.

Replaced battery, camera worked, put back in 'problem' battery camera didn't work. Threw battery in recycle bin, twice. I get the feeling that I got a bad couple as I read good things about them, that or we don't get the same Wasabi batteries here in Ireland that you get in the USA.

My X-T1 got flakey with the grip on a few times, check that the door on the grip is secure as I noticed that my camera seams to flick on and off on and off if the door is loose.

That definitely sounds like you got a bad batch or something then, did you contact the seller?

Thanks for the tip on the X-T1 grip, that's exactly what it was doing! :)

I have two Fuji cameras and use Wasabi batteries in both of them. No problems so far and the Wasabies seem to me to work as well as the Fuji batteries. If you do have a problem with a Wasabi battery they are very good at making it right. I also use a Wasabi charger as my main charger for my X-E2 with no problems.

Never email them, not bothered for the save of €8 each, the Ex-Pro batteries have proven very stable. Whatever works.
