Both lenses are focus-by-wire, and at least the 200/1.8 is not serviced by Canon anymore. The 400/2.8 IS v1 is horribly heavy and requires a monopod. What about a used 200/2 ? Way to not get it. Put all that aside, Which one would be more beneficial to you. Canon 1DX | EF 17-40 f4L | EF 50 STM | EF 85 f1.8 | EF 70-200 f2.8L IS II

If I hadn't any lens covering 200mm, and I was forced to choose between the two, then I'd get the 200/1.8 for sure. 1Dx, 5D2 and some lenses

It is extremely useful for what I shoot, whereas the 200m f1.8 would not be very useful to me at all. "Your" and "you're" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.

It is mechanical AF just like all of it's generation. You are right: the "IS" version is not a focus-by-wire lens. 1Dx, 5D2 and some lenses

runninmann what the heck do I know? More info | Apr 28, 2017 06:25 | #11 DJ, I know you said, "Put all that aside," but I wonder if there won't be a certain amount of bias against the 200 because Canon no longer services it. I understand your friend specifically referenced the 1.8, but comparing the current IS version might remove at least a portion of any potential bias.

Apr 28, 2017 20:03 | #15 Clearly the 300/1.8 would be the best if one has to decide between these two: Canon 7D/350D, Σ17-50/2.8 OS, 18-55IS, 24-105/4 L IS, Σ30/1.4 EX, 50/1.8, C50/1.4, 55-250IS, 60/2.8, 70-200/4 L IS, 85/1.8, 100/2.8 IS L, 135/2 L 580EX II, 430EX II * 2, 270EX II.
