My good friends at Yongnnuo were kind enough to send me a copy early to test and review.

It is available for pre-order now at adorama/B&H

Release date is this Monday.

First Impressions: Blown away by the build quality! Wow! It is built just as nice as the Canon version. They stepped up their game a lot. It feels nothing like their early lenses. This is built so well! Metal flange, metal body and metal filter threads!!

Focusing they did away with the external element focusing, it is all internal now and much quieter! Not as quiet as the USM one, but still so much better than their early lenses.

Focus speed is 90% as good as the Canon version, I tested it on a A7 with Adapter. Will be testing it on a 5DM3 and A6000 over the weekend, I expect focusing to be MUCH better on those.

Bokeh, I love it! At F/2 is is just great, 100% as good as the Canon. It's phenomenal at minimum focus distance, by F/2.8 is kinda waters down.

Sharpness, it's decent at F/2, sharpens a ton at 2.8. It's within 90% as good as the Canon version.

Chromatic aberrations at F/2 there are some minor visible when you pixel peep.
Not imaging ruining, but they're there, by 2.8 they're complement gone.

Flaring, since it has a huge element that is basically uncovered it does suffer from some flaring and loss of sharpening. Easy fix for it is to use you hand as a lens hood, I actually prefer having flare in my images so I intentional show that in the last picture.

Aperture is 9 blades. Circular until F/5.0, by F/5.6 you can notice the blades.

Filter thread is 58mm, similar to MANY Canon lenses you probably already own.

Does not come with a hood,(neither does the Canon). I have a ET-65 III on the way, will update on the fitment.

Bottom line you get 90% of the Canon version for 30% of the cost, I am super proud of Yongnuo's improvement.
Hoping they will continue to thrive and come out with designs of their own soon.

Samples (all jpegs with minor edits)

I am happy to see you've posted some thoughts and opinions. If you ask me, YN is 0 for 2 with the 50 & 85, according to reviewers. I've never used any YN lens.

The 50 was okay, identical performance to the 50mm II, just a little too late since Canon released the STM at the same time.

The 35mm got better but lacked build quality.

They gave me the option for the 85 or this one, already had an 85 so I went with this one.

Super glad they went with an all metal body instead of plastic!

Interesting,

So it's all metal?
Loud gear autofocus?
How does manual focus behave when AF is turned off?
Any compatibility issues between bodies (especially older Canon bodies) that you've noted?

I'm curious how it looks wide open for full body portrait with a busy background to evaluate the CA and bokeh.
I'm also curious how it performs with coma when stopped down a little and pointed at the night sky.

Very best,

May be of interest? First shots with Yongnuo f2 100mm. 10 shots with 8 of them unusable due to a "flat effect" which I'm guessing/hoping is due to lack of hood which I'm waiting to arrive. If the hood cures it, then not bad for a A$200 lens ??? If it doesn't, it's going back. Touch of smart sharpen applied. Will post more when lens hood arrives. It's solidly built and autofocus is fast enough.

Very best,

all metal on the outside, AF noise is noticeable but not super loud.

Only used it on the a7 so far.

Here's some more shots with it:
