Lightroom & Aperture

I'm new to LR and wondering if it does the same thing as Aperture does when you view your images the first time after uploading them. I shot some monochrome images and uploaded and for a split second LR showed them monochrome then switched them to color. So, does LR originally shows the image for that split second as the original "raw" image then switches to a "jpeg" version. Or is there a setting in LR to not do this. Thanks

LR initially uses the embedded preview JPEG from the RAW file. It does this while generating it's own preview based on your LR Default settings, which can be changed on a global level, as well as by camera model/serial number and even on individual ISO settings for each camera. What LR cannot do, and I don't believe that any other RAW processor can either, except Canon's DPP, is to read the in camera settings and apply them to the image.

In the import module it is possible to apply presets to images as they are imported, and IIRC it only uses the in file previews. So it should be possible to select all the monochrome image manually, and have LR apply a monochrome preset on import. If you don't like any of the included monochrome presets that Adobe supply then it is very easy to create your own. Just get a good representative image processed the way you like, and press the the + at the side of the presets section on the left tool bar. This will allow bring up a combo box that will allow you to select which settings you want included in the preset. Any settings you leave out will remain the same, all the others will be changed to the current settings when you then apply the preset.
