I have been procrastinating purchasing a new camera to replace my old 40D. But now I no longer have a choice. It was stored in my fifth wheel along with my 100-400 IS L lens. I'd been on the road for three months and had taken a ton of landscape photos. My 2013 Ford F350 diesel sprang a fuel leak and caught on fire. In just a couple of minutes, the truck was completely engulfed and the fire spread to my fifth wheel where the camera and lens were stored. Fortunately, my wife grabbed my spare bag which had my 24-70 f2.8L and 70-200 f2.8L lenses. And most of my pictures were stored on a portable drive in the camera bag also. The next day I tried to salvage what I could, but the camera and lens were nothing but ashes.

We received a fair insurance settlement and we've already replaced my truck and trailer. Now it's time to order a new camera. I'm seriously contemplating the 80D. Just need to make sure it meets my needs and that I get the right memory cards for it. I probably won't replace the 100-400 right away since I mostly shoot landscapes while on the road.

Jim

:(

That's too bad.

It is funny though, always the photographer. You got the shot of the truck on fire! I assume and hope no one was hurt.

While others can comment on the 80D, if you actually use your 100-400 L, you can get good used copies at a decent price. I love mine, and I'll take the push/pull over the twist any time, at least on this lens. Good luck!

Since the lenses that survived are EF lenses, it would make sense to buy a FF camera like a 6D.

Sorry to hear of your loss. As we full time in a 5th wheel, fire is our biggest concern. My biggest fear is not getting my gear out if the worst happens.

Hmmmm I think you really could have done better if you had moved camera left so as to get the engine in the foreground and the burning truck behind it.... or all alternatively further to the right so the fire truck was in the background. It's a nice shot but you can do better. I suggest taking the new truck and a can of petrol and having another go. ;)

If I had to buy now, I'd probably buy an 80D over a 6D, and I own a 6D.

I'm waiting for the supposedly forthcoming 6D Mk II

Jim, since you've indicated that you primarily shoot landscape you can enjoy pretty much any new Canon offering.

I would personally go with an aging 6D full frame if you pair it with your 24-70L f/2.8. The shallower dof from the full frame sensor really produces great images with an f/2.8 zoom. You'll get more 3d "pop" with versatility using a fast zoom. For your landscape photography I think shooting f/8-f/11 you'd be extremely pleased with a 6D or newer gen crop sensor 80D.

The 80D is seriously a camera body that Canon should be pleased to have produced for Canon fans. This is my first Canon crop sensor i've purchased in years. It's leaps and bounds better than your 40D in every aspect. Now at least buying the 80D you'll have micro AF adjust so you can tweak your auto focus system.

Are you finding you take a lot of photos with the 100-400?

I understand you own the 24-70 and 70-200 so it's extremely logical to buy another Canon body. IF you dare to try something new I'd say buying a fuji X-T20 with 18-55 f/2.8-f/4.0 image stabilized amazing kit lens would equally knock your socks off with fuji's latest 24 MP sensor. This Fuji kit is marginally more expensive than buying an 80D body. Yes getting this fuji kit is limiting to 1 lens but be prepared to be extremely impressed!!!! I'm finding the fuji HD video is extremely pleasing SOOC compared to my 80D. For me the fuji for video AF almost performs equal to the 80D dual pixel technology AF.

https://www.bhphotovideo.com …amera_with_xf18_55mm.html (external link)

I'm finding that I'm taking out my Fuji out more due to how it renders differently than my Canon gear. I'll have to say that my 80D with Canon 10-22 UWA lens is such a wonderful light combo too. Never did I ever expect to even consider a Fuji system but I bought into it for a new adventure in photography. It's really made me respect my Canon as well enjoying the difference in how fuji renders images.

I've used FF for many years and I'll have to admit buying the 80D and fuji system crop sensor has taped my mouth shut in FF snobbery. One thing I'll still admit is that FF with fast zooms really is a tad more pleasing to my eyes when I shoot wide open during events.

I've found that I grab my 80D and fuji more than my 5dmk2/3 for casual photos. Please note documenting family is extremely important to me and my crop sensor systems totally satisfies me in the IQ department!!!!

If you think the Fuji suggestion is nonsense :) I'd will have to say you will not be disappointed in a 6D or 80D. I question myself sometimes wondering if there is much difference between the aging 5dmk3 sensor technology vs 80D new gen crop sensor shooting landscape.

Thanks for the comprehensive write up. I did use the 100-400 from time to time, but mainly just to grab a wildlife shot. I can put the 1.6 extender on the 70-200 and still get in pretty tight.

I went ahead and ordered the 80D last night. After watching some more videos on YouTube, it looks like I've got a new learning curve to do.

Thanks again,

Jim

Wow! Now that is a sight, and quite the moment to photograph your own misfortune, but at the same time, very fortunate to be able to take that photograph and walk away from what could have been a fairly unpleasant last experience!

The 80D will serve you two well.

Very best,

Sad to hear of the demise of truck and trailer and much of your gear. Would you happen to have the melted camera and lens still, so you could later post photos (using your new camera)? Or smartphone shots of the melted photo gear?

2013 Ford.... too bad....

"24-70 f2.8L and 70-200 f2.8L lenses....I mostly shoot landscapes while on the road."

Maybe it worked for you with 40D, but with lenses like yours it never did for me. I recommend 6D.

Jim,

If your going to start doing some video with the 80D I'd suggest installing a free "flat profile" like cinestyle.

http://www.technicolor.com …utions-services/cinestyle (external link)

You must post process the video but it's way better than sooc video. Use your custom "C1 or C2" and setup for video just by twisting the selection knob ;)

Enjoy your 80D. It's probably one of the best crop sensors Canon has developed for the xxD series for image quality. The images are more rich and lush compared to your previous 40D.

I will be certain that if you bought a 6D you'd be able to see a "better" difference in IQ over the 80D while viewing on a computer monitor. However on print you'd have a hard time telling. This is where I put ego aside and realize that on print or social media could NOT tell the difference between FF, crop or even Medium format.

I will say my 5dmk with 16-35 f/2.8mk2 images are better than my 80D with $$ Canon 10-22 UWA lens. But again for sharing still photos you would have a hard time telling the difference. I'll admit my Fuji X-t2 with 10-24 f/4 UWA with image stabilization produces better images than my 80D with canon UWA.

With my SD cards I only use Sandisk Extreme pro cards. Lexar is my second choice and they are marginally cheaper.

Since you've made your decision on your 80D I would say enjoy it's performance. The AF performance is excellent and feels like I'm using a smaller sized "5dmk3" with a crop sensor. The single shot performance is extremely fast!! I was able to document my daughter sitting in an extremely fast spinning amusement park ride with NO issues at all. I cannot say the same for my fuji X-T2.

The 80D is a great all rounder camera with universal use. Just poking your brain but don't eliminate fuji brand from your mind..... IQ wise in the crop sensor world I think it's definitely 100% better with Jpg files straight out of the camera!!!! Also IQ wise to my eyes the fuji files are easy on the eyes and very pleasant with fuji colours.

Shooting the 80D you'll find the comfort zone in seeing typical Canon colours and how it renders images. With my experience the 80D renders slightly different to my 5dmk2 or 5dmk3. 80D produces images almost (not like typical canon) like my fuji bodies when I post process my 80D files.

Dont resist the touch screen.....you'll appreciate it A LOT!!! Something I'm waiting fuji to do with new X-T3 model in the future (X-T20 currently has a touchscreen finally!!)
