I used to make most of my frames. Simple ones that work well for prints. Still do occasionally. Mostly use metal frames now. I did get into cutting my own glass and that made it more cost effective especially when using special glass. Recently cut some museum glass for a friend. He uses it and realized it was way less expensive to buy a box of a dozen or so. Trouble is, unless you are using that size, you must cut. He has 18" x 24" stuff but ironically found it expensive to have some shop cut it for you. I'm trying to convince him to do it himself but I think that's a lost cause. I don't mind doing it and he may give me a piece for my efforts.

That's what friends are for!

[EDIT] On reflection, the above seems very cynical. I only meant swapping and sharing, combined with the good trust that comes from friendship, is a really positive possibility.

I've helped him cut mats for his exhibits and he helps me with when I need it.

Also I only frame with precut metal frames. Simple black frames are usually the ones I use. Still a lot cheaper to do it yourself. And white 4 ply museum board for back and over mat and archival linen tape to mount the prints.
