Currently I have this:

  • 2 YN568EXII flash units
  • 3 YN-622C triggers

I am in need of a 3rd speedlight and I know there has been some upgrades but would staying with the same model # be the best for me? Would mixing up models cause me issue with them possibly being different powers? And I know i will need one more trigger so would I want to stay with the same triggers or is there a better YN trigger to use on camera and relegate the YN-622C to the flash units themselves?

Another question is that when the flash unit is on the camera I can have full control from the camera menu but when on triggers I dont have the same control. Is there a YN trigger that that gives me that in camera control or at least full control over the flash units from the trigger? Using on a 7D2 and a 5D4 but I dont think that will matter much.

The bigger question is while I dont have the money to upgrade to a different flash system, would a better trigger system be in order? Will any other companies triggers even work?

Thanks for any help.

You can use any of the Canon EX/EX II units with YN controllers. Not sure which YN flashes work.

I don't get your second point. If I mount a YN-622 on my camera, I get the same flash-contol menus I get if I mount a Canon flash unit. The YN-622TX is made to go on the camera, and control remote YN-622 units, but the regular 622 controller can control other 622 units through the camera's menu system.

Yeah I goofed up the 2nd point. With the current triggers I have the controls will only let me use TTL and therefor I cant adjust the power other than a compensation level. I cant put the flash units in full manual and adjust from camera. Will the YN-622TX allow me to do full manual control to the flash units disregarding the camera menu all together?

Edit: now in playing around I can set the flash power manually on each unit but not through the camera. When I was using them the other day no matter what I set on the flash units it would auto go back to TTL and set its own power. Im just confused.

But really then the question is: will the YN-622TX give me full manual control over each unit without having to walk to each one every time I wanna change power?

The YN-622C-TX will give you control from the hotshoe flash or the camera menu. I have used it with a 5D Mk II and III, and I believe it works with a 7D Mk II.

I used YN622 triggers and the 568 EX II for a number of years and was quite happy, until I got hooked on Godox/Cheetahstand/Flashpoint. If you are going to stick with the YN622 series of triggers, I would add a YN-622C-TX and keep shooting. The only serious issue that comes to mind is only being able to support 3 groups, and having to carry lots of AA batteries.

Regards,

Thank you! I know my questions are a little wonky but I think you answered what I was trying to ask. I would eventually move to a better lighting system but its not in the financial cards right now. I can get another flash and trigger and stand for less than $200 and be good for quite some time.

Thanks for the help!

You can easily find a flash and a YN-622TX for under $200. There is a YN flash with a built in 622. I believe it is the YN-685.

I am not up to speed on the reliability of the YN-685, so you have to do your homework.
The 568 EX II was reliable from my point of view.

the 2 YN568EXII that I have have been great which is why I am pretty sure Ill just get a third. My total cost was about adding a stand a adapter and umbrellas. Full setup cost should still be under $200.

Heya,

The YN685 is a total replacement, saves you money and batteries, it's the same as the 568EXII but with a built in YN622. I replaced mine with the 685 because not buying extra Yn622's saves money & batteries. I love the flash, works great. My off-camera fleet is 560III though, as I prefer manual for a multi-light setup. I use the 685 for on camear when I need ETTL and can't meter or setup.

If I were starting over, I'd go with the Flashpoint R2 system (Godox) which is basically the same thing, with the nice R2 communication system. But that's a total re-purchase.

Very best,

I have two YN568EXIIs together with a Canon 430EXii. Absolutely no issues with the Yongnuos (nor with the Canon). In your position, I'd be inclined to get another YN568 just the same as the others just for simplicity's sake, although I have no experience of (and nothing against) the 685. The YN-622C-TX will give you full control in all modes for up to three groups of lights, either from the camera or from the controller itself.

In fact you get slightly more control from the controller because the TX will allow you to use off-camera second curtain sync, which you can't obtain directly from the camera or from Canon's own controllers. I'm not sure how Yongnuo managed that ... but it works.

For a Speedlite system, I think this set-up will do the job very well for a very good price. If/when I invest in studio strobes, I will probably look seriously at moving over to Godox based on what is currently available on the market.

The 622 units are indeed nice, I have 4 tranceivers and 1 622TX. I am about to list them all, as I am making the move over to Flashpoint for everthing. The 622 weak spot is really with HSS with the streaklights, it won't pass info properly through the hot shoe, but will via the sync cable, so I have a couple of those too.

My 5 622 units are going up for sale, as will both of my 580EXII flashes. When I am done with my acquisitions, I will have 1 AD200, 2 AD360, and 2 Flashpoint R2 flashes, all tied to the R2 system. When the dust settles, I think I will only be out $150. :)
