Hi. My DSLRs are gathering dust as the X-T2 is glorious (and the X-T1 was my gateway mirrorless). I will need to wean myself off the DSLRs slowly but struggling with which one I should sell first - 7Dii or 5Dii? I'd like to sell one to fund future Fuji purchases.

I am leaning towards the 5Diii because I think I might want to shoot birds/animals with the 7Dii. And then I think I want to keep the 5Diii so I can shoot in low light.

Any thoughts to help me make my decision?

Thanks!

Sell the 5D. You went Fuji to avoid walking around with all that.

Keep the 7D2, it's cheaper, less money tied up in it when collecting dust, will continue to get cheaper, and gives you something pretty serious when attached to a telephoto if you still go after wildlife.

Very best,

Boils down to your uses and lenses imo. For me, I'd choose to keep the 7DII. Honestly though, if you have no need for long primes, I'd sell both and go whole hog on Fuji :)

Do you shoot studio?

I still appreciate the full frame with magical 24-70L f/2.8mk2 in the studio.

Simply analyze what you shoot and determine if your needs.

I used a combo of 5dmk3 w/24-70 in my home studio and it landed the AF perfectly. I also used my X-T2 with 55-200 triggering my Einstein's with cybersync triggers. I tested the X-t2 face detect and it did reasonably well but during the shoot my halogen modeling light died. I started to get "no AF" missing the shot. Even using selected points I started to get "no AF". The lack of modeling light did lose some light but I still had reasonable lighting.

The Canon 5dmk3 hammered the shots with 100% hit rate even when my modeling light died.

I do feel fuji still isn't quite there with AF in certain challenging light situations.

I do have to say the fuji results were very good in studio. I still have a preference to canon in studio though.

Sell both now and use the funds to buy a lens for photography animals/birds. I speak from experience when I say that holding onto an old camera when switching brands just means it'll continue to collect dust and depreciate, when ultimately you plan on selling both anyway.

OP,

Have you considered keeping both? It's not uncommon for alot of photogs to have two systems.

If you sell your entire Canon kit you'll be able to buy a fuji 100-400 to cover your telephoto needs for your X-t2. However you'll be limited to a variable aperture telephoto zoom lens that may meet your needs.

In my case I'm loving fuji as my secondary system and Canon as primary.

I guess my point is that if Fuji is completely meeting your needs both in AF and IQ you can switch with zero hesitation.

For me I still rely on Canon's AF. It has not failed me when I'm demanding. My X-T2 still has missed some pivotal photos due to the "no AF" not locking focus during fast paced situations.

Some folks with their style of shooting find this perfectly fine with Fuji AF. In majority of cases the Fuji X-T2 works great for me. However I've had situations where I've missed money shots when the "no AF" red indicator does not allow AF. This is why I own two systems.

Before selling your Canon gear buy a long telephoto lens for your X-T2. This will be a good indicator if you can drop all of your Canon gear.

OT, would you be able to describe what it is about the XT2 that makes you want to go all mirrorless that the Xt1 was not able to do?

From reading his original post I think the X-T1 introduced him to the fuji world.

I'll admit when I purchased the new X-T10 I've been hooked on how fuji renders the world.

However I still think my 5dmk3 looks better in my studio than my fuji X-T2. I'll need to change my post processing techniques when I shoot fuji in the studio.

Everyone is unique in style. Thank goodness for a variation of different brands and lenses.

The X-T2 does great in low light, sell the 5D3 ;)

Then when you're done "weaning", sell the 7Dii and use the camera you clearly already know you enjoy most

I did the two system thing for a good while, trying to convince myself I "needed" full frame, and before that I "needed" a DSLR... pssshh, I haven't missed either for a second since moving to Fuji.

In what way? I have 5dmk3, XT1 and they both do same in studio. I saw your earlier about XT-2 no nailing AF in case of burnt out modeling light. I have same issue with 5dmk3, 85L when modeling light is off.

It's cool how you can turn any thread into a comparison of AF abilities between the 5D3 and X-T2. It's a gift really. Maybe even a super power. ;-)a
