I truly doubt that the 70-300mm with TC would be as good at AF as the naked SIGMA.

I tried a Kenko 1.4X on my 70-300L. It slowed things down to a crawl... and the image quality suffered as well. I only tried it once.... that was enough.

Sorry I was t all that clear. My intention would be to use the 1.4TC with my current 70-200/4 IS. The big 'it all depends' for me is the specs of the 6D2. Will it be capable of fully replacing my aging 7D especially in things like sports. If I buy a 6D2, and it does have enough FPS and AF points, then 300mm will not be long enough since the current 200 on crop is too short.

On the other hand if the 6D2 is just too weak in the sport sector, do I fully invest in crop options to make the current 7D better in portraits like get a 50-100/1.8 and get a slightly longer lens like the 70-300 options or add a TC.

I am kind of rambling but I really need to see what the 6D2 brings and plan from there.

I would say the 6D2 and 70-200/2,8 IS would be good for portraits.
and the 7D with the 70-200 would be good for sports.

add the 100-400 and wow!
2 bodies and 2 lens combo.... :p :p

I wish I could afford a 6D2, 70-200/2.8 II and a 100-400 II all at once, but it's not in the budget. Maybe one and trade in some other stuff for a second item. It's really why I am interested in the 100-400 Sigma in the first place because it gets me closer to going full frame with the 6D2, provided of course it isn't spec'd too lightly.

So at this point is there any one who has used both the Canon 100-400 II and the new Sigma? I would like more information on the AF accuracy and TDP Brian's "not overly impressed" doesn't really quantify how much worse. Are we talking about a 10% drop in hit rate on erratic moving subjects like for field sports, or is it worse? I could live with 85% for soccer dad unpaid shots compared to a 95% hit rate for the Canon especially for the cost savings, but much worse than that and I would probably become too annoyed with it.

looks like IQ wise the new Sigma 100-400 is equal to or best the canon 100-400II

Does any of the lens rental sites have the lens at this point? I checked BorrowLens and LensRental and they don't have it yet.

I rented it from Lens Rental back in May, so they do have it. Loved the size, weight and quality of the images using my 7D2 and 6D. Build quality was acceptable except for the lens barrel, it felt like cheap plastic. Overall I really liked the lens though.

I just need AF, but perhaps I would never really track something in the air that would cause the AF any grief. Something I have to decide... The 150-600 is just so large, and won't fit into any of my bags/cases very well. I would have to decide how important that 20mm is as well. Sigh... Looks great IQ-wise though, it kills the 100-400L MKI.

I rented it from LensRentals.com about three weeks ago. They have it. Now that you mention it, I vaguely recall there was something strange like I could see it on my phone's browser but not my desktop's or vice versa, something like that. If you call or email them they should be able to help you out.

And now I found it on LensRentals. I must have been looking at the wrong category. Thanks.

If you scroll down to the comments, Dustin also is making hints about AF. One place he said it wasn't up for tracking sports and definitely wasn't up for BIF. He said the AF part of the video review was coming next week.

I am sure it is fine for gliding birds, especially after it acquires initial focus. It is more the "oh a bird is diving to land in the water" and then wait for the lens to get a lock on that bird as you pan with it as it comes in. Canon does better here than Sigma.
