I have a Sigma 17-55 2.8 lens and can buy the dock pretty cheap. is it worth buying. I'm wondering if I really need it. My lens is working fine.

The 17-50mm 2.8 is not part of the new line of sigma lenses so it would not work with that dock. The dock only works with the newer "art, contemporary, and sport" lenses. As "gremlin75" stated the dock works with the "art", "contempory" and "sport" lenses. They are designated in their names "A", "C" and "S".
