Hi,
I have a Canon 1D Mark III and it treated me great while I was mainly shooting sports, but since I'm heading a different way now, I'm looking for a replacement. I don't really want so spend too much so I was looking at the used market and there's a Canon 6D with 10.000 actuations near me for 900€. Would that still be a good purchase? The only thing that's pushing me back is the fact that it's a somewhat old camera. I have a 28-75 2.8 and a 70-200 f4 if that matters. Thank you

The 6D will be a great camera. If you're looking for a budget modern full frame, the 6D is it.

The only other full frame options are either much older (but still plenty good, just depends on what you're trying to do with them), or much more expensive.

What are you going to be doing?

What is the 1D3 not doing that you need?

Very best,

Thanks for the answer!

Well but isn't the 6D2 supposed to come out next month? Won't that bring the 6D price down? And isn't the 6D going to be discontinued?

Right now I'm mainly shooting social events, both indoors and outdoors. In some rare occasions, some portraits and private sessions. Sometimes small sports events like marathons, but I suppose the 6D AF is fast enough?

I would like a bit more low light capabilities than I'm having with the 1D and overall more image quality. I did a 3m print last month and it didn't came out as well as I was expecting.

Sorry for throwing so many questions out there :p

It was supposed to be out in February, and then last month, and now this month. Until it's officially announced it's anyone's guess. Even then it'll likely be near $2k. For the image quality you get, refurb/gently used 6D's are an absolute steal, I say go for it, go shoot and forget whatever ROI you have in your head.

I'm sure when the 6D2 comes out later this year, the used market will be pretty good for 6D bodies. So you'll have to decide *when* you need a new camera. The 6D was around $1800-2000 when it was announced, and I'm assuming the 6D2 will go for about the same.

The 5D2 might be a good example to look at as a price floor. Right now the 5D2 is around $800 on the used market, and the 6D is around $950. So the price of the 6D will drop a little bit, but probably not by a lot.

Image quality of the 6D is between the 5D3 and the 5D4. Focusing speed is the biggest drop from your 1D3. I've heard focusing speed is similar to the 5D2 I have, which is faster than the 450D I upgraded from, but isn't anywhere close to my 7D2 or what your 1D3 can probably do. I used my 5D2 once for a college football game, and it was okay, but I had to work a lot harder to time the shot and focusing.

I don't have any direct experience with the 28-75, but from what I've read the megapixel increase from your 1D3 to a 6D might start to show the sharpness limitations of that lens. Your 70-200 will keep up with the increased resolution just fine.

I wouldn't expect the used price to plummet once the new 6D hits the street, I think the prices are already taking that into account.

I don't know what the used market is like over there, but they seem to be in good supply here. I am still very happy with my 6D, but I am going to meltdown if the new one is not announced by July. LOL. Not sure I will have the cash for it, but I'm sure going to try.

The launch of the 5DIV did not seem to make a great change to the used prices of 5DIII or 5DII.
I suspect that a similar lack of real change to used prices of 6D might occur similarly; certainly, for a brief time 6D new stock will sell at reduced prices from the current new 6D prices.

That's a good point. During the holiday season of 2015, it was common to find new 6Ds marked down to around $1100. Last fall the sales weren't quite as good because the exchange rates weren't as favorable, but I could certainly see some pretty good discounts on remaining new 6D models after the 6D2 comes out.

Doesn't matter when the 6D2 is released. It will not impact anything for at least a year or more.
Whether something is discontinued doesn't matter; support is what matters. They only just stopped supporting the original 5D last year. The 6D is fine.
The 6D has excellent center point AF and its sensitive to -3 EV which is a big improvement and great for low light.
The 6D has excellent high ISO performance, edging out the 5D3 even by a hair.

Don't expect used prices to improve much. I've seen 6D at $850~950, and 5D2 at $700~800. We're on 5DIV now and the 5D2 price has only budged a small amount over two full releases of the same body. The 6D will likely not go below $800 USD for a long, long time. In 10 years, it may become a $500 camera. By then, you will be using something else probably.

Very best,

Wait for the 6D3. I predict it will be released on 9/23/2019.

Is 900Eur a good price? I'm asking because I paid $900 US almost two years ago for a camera with less than 1K clicks, all the packaging, and three batteries as well. I bought mine through Craigslist.org, from a private party.

I've noticed the same thing during my periodic perusal of the classifieds here and on Craigslist. It's actually pretty amazing: If you can accept the few disadvantages relative to the newer models (e.g. lower frame rate and slightly more noise), you can get a professional full frame DSLR for the price of a Rebel.
