Quick question please (i hope)

I have a project I am doing with my neice
to shoot inanimate objects for a presentation
and I was planning to use a 2 flash lighting situation

I have a 600 ex rt and a 430 ex ii
mounted on a 5d3 preferrably
though I could whip out the 7d if better...

i understand that i cannot get the 430 ex ii as a slave vis a vis radio frequency
but can either camera be the "master" for an optical signal setup thereby freeing both flashes from the camera body?

if yes, how do i do it????

or use the 430 as the master?

thanks a lot!!!

Gearwise, you don't quite have a complete setup.

Option A: With no additional purchase, you can use the 600 on-camera and 430 as slave (E-TTL).
Option B: With E-TTL cable, you can bring the 600 off-camera and use both (E-TTL).
Option C: With Canon ST-E2, you achieve Option B without cables. Expensive route even with 3rd party versions.
Option D: With basic sync cables, you can use both off-camera (no E-TTL).
Option E: With three non-Canon radio transceivers, you achieve Option B (E-TTL).

Canon, Nikon, Contax, Leica, Sony, Profoto.

I love my YN-622 setup. There is a set on the 'sale' pages for a fair price.

The 7D's pop-up flash can be used as a wireless (optical) eTTL master for both flashes. That's probably your best solution.

If you want to add the 430EXII into the -RT radio system, you could use your 600EX-RT as an on-camera master, and add a Yongnuo YN-E3-RX or Phottix Laso receiver to the foot of the 430EXII. You could also add an ST-E3-RT or clone as your on-camera trigger for both flashes.

Or you could use any number of TTL/HSS-capable radio triggers, but if they are not -RT compatible, you'd have to buy receivers for both flashes as well as a hotshoe transmitter.

if yes, how do i do it????

You basically go into the flash control settings ( 1st shooting menu -> Flash control -> Built in flash func. Setting -> Wireless func.), and enable Wireless for the pop-up flash.

or use the 430 as the master?...

None of the 430EX's other than the III-RT have master capability; they are slave-only. The 600EX-RT has master and slave capability for both optical and RT radio. Your 7D's pop-up flash has master optical capability, but not RT radio. Also, with the 7D's pop-up you will not have wireless HSS or 2nd-curtain sync capability.

many thanks to you all.

you are right - the flash setup wasn't complete
we made do, though I seem to need more units.

i used some reflectors, and 600 as master and the 400 as group B

next comes the PP

thanks for the comments
