May 11, 2017 23:08 | #3 Thanks, I use a Wimberly gimbal/Gitzo tripod with the 600 most of the time. I usually have a second camera for handheld (with the 200-400/1.4x) at my side. Photo #7 above was taken with that rig. A lot of people say tracking aircraft with a tripod is too hard. I wouldn't show up without it.

The thing on top is a mini red dot that is "zeroed" to the centerpoint on my focus grid. It allows me to track fast-moving aircraft and lock-on focus very easily, just like a HUD on a fighter aircraft. Works great on birds in flight too.

I find mounting the red dot on the gimbal axis works best for me, versus mounting it on the camera. I used a wimberly flash mount for the gimbal. Rock solid and low...getting the site low to the lens' centerline is also important.
