Unfiltered wide angle is fine for the camera.

Thank you. Can't wait to see what kind of results I get.

I don't think so. These are some regular dark spots probably magnetic fields but I might be wrong :)

I did a second practice run today at the time of day that maximum eclipse will be at. I need to take the gimbal head off of my heavy tripod and use the ball head from the smaller tripod. I could not point up enough to get the sun with the gimbal. Bummer because the gimbal is a lot easier to use with the big lens.

I saw your photos so I thought that I would see if I could get a similar shot. It is partly cloudy here and I guess that I should practice shooting the sun if I'm going to get photos of the partial eclipse (I won't be travelling for the totality). I decreased the exposure by 2 stops and increased the contrast to bring out the sun spots.

Thanks!

That was shot with a 10 stop filter only. I believe I explain the inherent risks of doing so in that thread.

It would be cool if the ISS transited during the eclipse! I searched a couple weeks ago and I don't think it will happen anywhere during this eclipse.

Edit: Not explained in the thread so I'll state here:

If you only use a 10 stop filter you are risking damaging your sensor. If you look through your eyepiece, you'll damage your eyesight.

I focused that image with live view so I never risked my eyesight.

I've shot a few shots like this without damaging the camera sensor. Your results might be different.

64%, damn :( They changed it from being completely sunny. And in the midwest, 64% usually doesn't mean a lot of nice puffy clouds for a cool eclipse/cloud shot. It means a thick, hazy, gray overcast sky.

RKSphoto,

That image looks a little out of focus. You should be able to see the sun spots a little better. Yesterday had a string of them. https://sohowww.nascom.nasa.gov/data/realtime/hmi_igr/512/ (external link)

The orientation of the sun spots your pic will be different because NASA rotates the image to the sin's polar north. You should be able to resolve what NASA has in its image.

What lens are you using?

Thanks for the tips.

I am using a Canon 100-400.

Practice shot from today. This is using the 6D's wifi to control the camera from my iPad Pro. Works great. I get to sit in the shade while the camera is out in the sun. Need to run out and adjust the angle every few minutes, though. 6D, 100-400 v2 and 1.4x TC. Orion 4.57" solar filter.

Here is another test - honest thoughts?

The sun spots showed up better at least.

good shots

you could easily up the exposure a bit as an example of M_Six 's image in the post above yours

you will find it much easier to recover detail when exposing on the high side rather than the low side

I'm from Missouri and tomorrow is the day of the solar eclipse. Too late to buy the Solar film(Filter) now. Do you think is this safe for my camera if I used the LEE 10 stops filter and the .9 ground ND but use the dark part about 3 stop and top with CPL about 2-3 stops to equal 16 stop to pictures the eclipse?. I will use the mirrorless camera and use the viewfinder to see the sun through 16 stops filter.

Please, help.

Thank you.
