Why not DPP4? It is free with the camera.

DPP isn't really much in the way of a management system though is it? Although it has a viewer, I don't think it allows for keywording, titles, captions and the addition of IPTC metadata; or for advanced sorting and easy methods for finding specific images. I have never really got into DPP, when I got my 300D it shipped with the predecessor, the exact name of which escapes me right now, it might have been something simple like RAW Process. It was the worst bit of photographic software I have ever used! That includes the DOS Command line filters and resizing (interpolation) software that I had to write back in 1993/4 as the coursework for my C Programming for Engineers course at University. So I very quickly found RAWShooter Essentials, which was eventually bought by Adobe and incorporated into ACR/LR. Because of that acquisition I then moved to first Bridge/ACR/PS and then with V4 to using LR for all aspects of image management and RAW processing combined.

Did you find something you liked? My money is on Luminar 4, launching next month. I was able to trial a pre-release and the AI features are pretty impressive - was able to replace a sky in my landscape shot of the harbour bridge, and it managed to recognise all the various cables/rungs of the bridge!

Capture One is the best out there if you need near-perfect colour accuracy, but it's got the steepest learning curve, even if you make the interface look just like Lightroom's.

On1Photo RAW is impressive too, and I especially like the ability to work with layers - this gets rid of the need to use Photoshop. However, colour renditioning of RAWs isn't on par with Lr IMO.

Affinity Photo is next on my list! Will let you know

I would suggest a LR/PS sub and you can be their tutor :)

I wholeheartedly agree with the previous posters about Affinity Photo software. Although I've only kicked the tires on it after using it some for a couple of days and watching some YouTube videos about it I'm hooked. It's certainly everything I need without a subscription and for only $50 it has free updates, for now. I got a copy for my iPad Pro also.

Yes I own CS6 and the last Light Room available on disc. I'm just not a fan of reoccurring parasitic income deficits when it's not needed.

Btw, although not related to the post so much, I prefer DPP for RAW conversions versus PS. Why? It does a better job of converting the pixels imho.

So, does Affinity work as a photo editor? I was under the impression it was a Ps kind of app?

Given they are so new to photography and face a steep learning curve just using the camera, learning composition, using DOF and shutter speeds etc, I would recommend Photoshop Elements to begin with.

It has more than enough power and features to ease a newcomer into processing and using RAW, at reasonable cost, wth the added advantage that the skills they develop in PSE are very transferable to CC, should this prove to become a long-term hobby..

Yes, Affinity Photo is a photo editor like photoshop. It can also handle RAW files in a way analogous to Adobe Camera RAW.

Awesome, thanks. How often do they come out with new versions? Are the upgrade prices reasonable? Thanks again.

I don’t follow the update cycle. The version I bought, all updates are free.

I still use PS. I bought Affinity to support them and to have an alternative option. Played with it enough to understand its capabilities.

Usually Updates are free (.x releases of the same version number) while Upgrades to a new version number cost money.

That is standard in the industry.

Could be wrong, but I believe Affinity offered a more generous plan in their early days for early adopters.

DPP today bears little if any resemblance to what you used in the days of a 300D! It has in fact become quite a PP package, especially since version 4+ came out. Let’s not lose sight of the original problem...

I have friends who are just getting into photography. They are pretty committed to it and have purchased a Canon 80D with two "kit" lenses and purchased a pretty extensive yet basic class online.

They are asking me which software they should use on their Windows 10 computer. I use Lightroom on a Mac and so have mentioned LR to them but I am hesitant to recommend that they subscribe to LR/PS at this early point in their exploration of photography even though I am pretty sure it would be the right thing fo them to learn.

Do you guys have suggestions for a Lightroom type program that works well on Windows 10 and that they could purchase with a one-time fee or should I just have them subscribe?

Thanks for your help.
