I'm planning on offloading all my gear... Amazon's trade-in program might be the easiest way to do so. What do you think about the prices? How picky are they about inspection?

Saves me all the trouble of having to wait for a buyer for each of the gear, plus I think they cover shipping.

I have often thought about it, but it is so easy to sell on Amazon and I invariably just sell it outright. Even with fees and shipping, my net is more than what the TradeIn will give me. It just requires patience.

Very true... I'm looking at the prices on the used market and these are way below. It just requires patience... hmm...

I just listed 2 580EXII flashes, for $199 each. It took about 3 days, but a buyer came forward and purchased both. :)

Some items just languish. The more used sellers there are, the chances are that the item just isn't in demand, and you will wait longer. Put photos of the items into your listing, it will help. It also helps that I have 100% feedback (12 items), vs those that have below 100%, or have no feedback. It takes time to build up at least some sort of Amazon reputation, most buyers don't leave feedback. :(

What are Amazon's seller fees? Is it is a fixed $ amount or % of asking price?

Before you submit your listing, it will tell you what the fee is, and how much you will get back toward shipping. I don't know the exact rules.

Amazon's trade-in program is OK,but you rarely get top dollar, They pay by gift card I do think.

Better off selling here or in Amazon Sellers.

The above was written as part of an attempt to waste time.

I traded a few things over the years with them.

As said before, you won't get top resale value like you would selling an item on PoTn...and they reject items inconsistently. I tried to trade in a lens and they rejected it because they stated scratches on the front end element, which I know was not to be true.

I didn't compare the pricing, but check out KEH.com as well. It's quick and easy. I know I probably "lost" about $50 selling them my 10-22 lens recently, but sometimes it's worth the instant satisfaction to just box it up and be done IMO.

If your prices are good you should be able to sell in here quicker than it will take amazon to get your items and inspect. Plus the fact they pay by gift card sucks.

I'm on the FM forums, and also sold a lens on Amazon.

FM (or any person-to-person site) > Amazon ---> as far as return on investment

The only benefit Amazon has on the FM forums (and other similar sites) is that they're an established name and can offer at least some sort of guarantee.

Some forewarning though about Amazon. When I had my lens listed, I had received an email from Amazon indicating my lens has sold and to ship. However, when logging onto Amazon and checking my sale, it didn't come up. I waited several hours and the sale still didn't show in my account, even though I had received this email from Amazon indicating so. At the end of the day, after discussions with Amazon CS, I realized that the email was a scam. However, it was SO realistic looking. I'm not usually duped my scam emails but the entire message looked very authentic. I was actually pretty impressed.

Amazon Trade-In pays you in Amazon giftcard (deposited into your account. You don't get a physical card). The price they pay you is like walking into any other store and trading in. They will give you the very lowest only because they will resell at a higher price to make that profit. So you'll NEVER get the current market value. However, it is quick if you just want to unload stuff and don't care about maximizing the value.

Selling on Amazon is like selling on eBay or on forums. Of course, there are fees associated with selling on Amazon. While eBay calls theirs Final Value Fee (FVF), Amazon calls theirs Variable Closing Fee (VCF) because the fees vary depending on the category it is listed. However https://salecalc.com/amazon (external link) will give you a general idea. Also, when you go through the steps of listing on Amazon, they let you know how much it will take in fees if it is sold. Amazon also compensates on the shipping but depending on how heavy the item is, you sometimes end out paying out of pocket for the difference. ie: Amazon charges buyer $7.95 for shipping but it will cost you $15.81 to ship. So this dips into your net sale.

If you're all about maximizing the sale price, its best to sell on forums. The only fee you'll be paying is PayPal fees.

Agree with the post by 1KIND. Essentially, it boils down to what's most important to you. Maximizing your earnings (forums) vs. convenience and time (e.g. Amazon, Ebay, etc.).
